Built for a single visit by Jahangir, who is said to have stayed one night in it. Three storeys of chambers and terraces around a courtyard, and you can walk almost all of it unsupervised, which is rare for a building this size.

Ram Raja Temple

The only place where Rama is worshipped as a reigning king, so the state police mount a guard and present arms at set hours. It is a palace rather than a temple because the image, once installed here, could not be moved to the temple built for it.

Chaturbhuj Temple

The tallest thing in Orchha, built to house the Rama image that ended up staying in the palace instead — so the sanctum it was designed around has never held its deity. Steep narrow stairs climb to the upper galleries; go up for the view over the chhatris and the Betwa.
