Atla Tadde

A traditional festival where married women fast for their husbands' health, enjoying small rice crepes and evening swings.

Tradition holds that Gauri kept this fast to win Shiva as her husband, and Andhra women have kept it since — married women for their husbands, unmarried women in the hope of a good one.

Women rise before dawn for the early Udayastama meal, then keep a waterless fast through the day. In the evening they gather in their neighbourhoods, ride rope swings, and apply mehendi to their hands.

After sighting the full moon, the women worship Goddess Gauri and offer eleven small dosas (atlu) of rice flour and jaggery in earthen vessels, which are then gifted to elders and other married women.

Offering the eleven atlu and riding the swings on this day is believed to deepen the affection between husband and wife and protect the family's health.

The festival has been part of coastal Andhra's culture since ancient times, with clear mentions in Telugu folk literature and traditional recipe lore.

An Andhra women's festival that runs on the moon: the fast breaks only after moonrise, and until then there is mehendi and swings hung from the courtyard trees. What gets offered is minapa attu — hot black-gram dosas — which is where the name comes from. This happens in village courtyards rather than temples — if someone invites you into one, that is the festival.
