Significance

A celebration of Krishna lore and local folk heritage, with Raslila dance at its heart.

Why it's celebrated

Organized to welcome the departure of winter, celebrate the blossoming rabi crops, and preserve the unique multi-state folk legacy of the Krishna bhakti movement.

How it's celebrated

The palace gardens of Deeg and the historic arenas of Bharatpur are transformed into cultural stages. Folk artists perform the famous 'Charkula' dance (balancing lit lamps on heads) and Raslila dramas. The entire atmosphere is filled with showers of colored powder (Gulal) and folk songs.

Key rituals

As a state-curated cultural heritage festival, it features formal lamp-lighting and floral tributes to the deities. The defining event is the spectacular activation of the historic fountains at the Deeg Palace, creating a unique water-and-color show for the public.

Beliefs & spiritual meaning

Immersing oneself in the Braj songs and being showered with the festive colors is locally believed to fill the heart with divine love (Prema Bhakti), removing domestic friction and welcoming summer with joy.

History & origins

Conceived by the Rajasthan Tourism Department to highlight the distinct Braj cultural zone of eastern Rajasthan (which links closely with Mathura and Vrindavan), the festival has become a premier winter highlight for travellers.

What to expect

The sandstone courtyards of the Deeg Palace are enveloped in a swirling cloud of bright pink and yellow powder. Folk dancers whirl across the stone stages, balancing multi-tiered wooden towers of glowing lamps on their heads with effortless skill. The air is alive with the joyous strains of Braj folk music, with a sensory and introduction to spring.
