Kila Raipur Sports Festival

A famous rural sports carnival featuring bullock-cart races, traditional Punjabi feats of strength, and exuberant village athletics.

Founded to provide a competitive arena for village youth to display their physical prowess, teamwork, and martial spirit, the festival honors the robust, agrarian, and warrior legacy of the Punjab plains.

The event features traditional sports like kabbadi, tug-of-war, and lifting weights, alongside daring stunts like pulling vehicles with hair or teeth, riding horses standing up, and loading crop carts quickly. Rhythmic Bhangra dancing and commentating add to the high-energy atmosphere.

The games open with a grand march past of rural athletes carrying regional banners, followed by the hoisting of the athletic association flag and the sounding of traditional Punjabi war-drums (dhols).

The local community views these games as a testament to the community's physical endurance and resilience. It serves as a rite of passage for young farmhands and a matter of immense village pride and honor.

The festival was envisioned by a local philanthropist named Inder Singh Grewal in 1933. It started as a small inter-village athletic meet and has since expanded into a globally recognised event that attracts international competitors.
