Rakhi Purnima (Gamha Purnima)

Celebrates siblings alongside the worship of domestic cattle and agricultural instruments, marking Lord Balarama's birthday.

In mainstream mythology, it commemorates Draupadi tying a strip of her saree onto Lord Krishna’s bleeding finger, prompting his vow of lifelong protection. In Odisha, it marks the birthday of Lord Balabhadra, the agricultural deity who wields the plow (Halayudha).

Sisters tie decorative threads (Rakhi) around their brothers' wrists, applying a vermilion tilak and performing an arati. In Odisha, domestic cows and bullocks are thoroughly washed, decorated with sandalwood and garlands, and offered a special layered rice cake called Gamha Pitha.

The primary ritual involves the tying of the sacred thread accompanied by Vedic mantras. In Puri’s Jagannath Temple, specialized artisans craft grand rakhis for the processional deities. Bullocks undergo a bypass ritual where they skip over a small elevated mud mound symbolizing agricultural boundaries.

The Rakhi thread acts as a cosmic shield against evil forces. It is believed that honoring cattle on this day ensures bumper harvests, protects livestock from seasonal diseases, and invokes the protective blessings of Lord Balabhadra over the household.

Tracing its roots to Vedic times, the idea of the protective amulet (Rakshika) is set out in the Bhavishya Purana. In Odisha, the royal dynasties of Kalinga made Gamha Purnima a principal state festival to raise the standing of dairy farming and agriculture.

The atmosphere is intimate and joyful, filled with the aroma of roasting coconuts and steaming pithas. Inside homes, siblings laugh and exchange gifts over colorful platters of sweets. Outside in rural courtyards, bullocks are treated like royalty, their horns painted in bright hues and foreheads anointed with paste, turning a regular family day into a beautiful tribute to both human and animal bonds.
