Wangala Festival

A post-harvest thanksgiving of the Garo people to the sun god Misi Saljong, famous for synchronised drumming and traditional dance in colourful costume.

The festival is held to honor and thank Misi Saljong, the benevolent sun deity and supreme giver of agricultural abundance, ensuring that no grain from the fresh harvest is consumed before proper gratitude is offered.

Men and women dress in traditional festive attire featuring feathers and handwoven fabrics. They perform rhythmic dances accompanied by lines of long wooden drums (kram), traditional flutes, and energetic chants that move across the festival grounds.

Key rituals include 'Rugala,' where the village priest offers the first brew of fresh rice beer and cooked agricultural produce to the deity, followed by 'Sasat Soa,' the ceremonial burning of incense to bless the houses.

The Garo people believe that honoring the sun deity preserves the fertility of the soil, ensures regular monsoons for future seasons, and safeguards the collective health and peace of the village clans.

Originally a traditional religious festival of the animist 'Songsarek' Garos, the event was formalised into a large-scale cultural festival in 1976 to protect, preserve, and showcase indigenous Garo identity to the wider world.

The Wangala Festival is a powerful display of rhythmic movement and community pride. The entire air vibrates with the deep, coordinated beat of one hundred long wooden drums played by lines of men in traditional turbans adorned with feathers. Moving in perfect sync, rows of women in handwoven patterns execute graceful dances that mimic agricultural tasks, creating an immersion into the ancient living heritage of the Garo Hills.
