Rock Shelters of Bhimbetka
Madhya Pradesh
Photos
Some of these paintings are older than agriculture. People sheltered under these rocks for something like a hundred thousand years.
What you're looking at
Around 750 natural rock shelters in the Vindhya hills south of Bhopal, roughly 500 of them painted. The art spans an enormous stretch of time — the oldest surviving paintings are Mesolithic, around 10,000 years old, and some layers continue into the medieval period. Evidence of occupation at the site goes back far further.
Why it matters
Bhimbetka is one of the oldest known places of continuous human occupation anywhere, and the paintings record the change from hunting to herding to settled life, layered on the same walls. The nearby village of Bhimbetka still uses motifs recognisably descended from them.
Look for these
01
Layers painted over layers
In many shelters you can see a later painting cutting across an earlier one — sometimes several thousand years apart on the same patch of rock.
02
The colours are minerals
Reds and whites from haematite and limestone, bound with animal fat and plant gum. They have lasted because the overhangs shelter them from direct rain.
03
Hunting scenes and then horses
The earliest work shows hunters with bows and large animals. Horses and riders appear much later — a datable marker of a whole change in society.
04
The Zoo Rock
One shelter is packed with animal figures, hence the name — elephants, deer, bison, and a boar of unusual size.
05
The rock formations themselves
Even without the art the site is striking — great sandstone blocks balanced and hollowed by weathering, some named after their shapes.
Before you go
- About 45 km from Bhopal — an easy half day, and it pairs with Sanchi.
- Only around 15 shelters are on the public trail; a guide will point out paintings you would walk past.
- Do not touch the painted surfaces — skin oils are the main threat now.
- Morning or late afternoon; the paintings read better in raking light than at noon.
- October to March.
