Viewpoint

The highest point in the Satpuras, famed for sunset views.

Elsewhere in Madhya Pradesh

Not in Pachmarhi — these are in other towns across the state.

Chaturbhuj Temple

Attraction

Orchha

The tallest thing in Orchha, built to house the Rama image that ended up staying in the palace instead — so the sanctum it was designed around has never held its deity. Steep narrow stairs climb to the upper galleries; go up for the view over the chhatris and the Betwa.

Sesh Shaiya Vishnu Statue

Hidden Gem

Bandhavgarh National Park

A reclining Vishnu around thirty-five feet long, carved in the tenth century, with the Charan Ganga stream rising at its feet. Inside the Tala zone, so you reach it on a safari rather than on your own.

Jahangir Mahal

Attraction

Orchha

Built for a single visit by Jahangir, who is said to have stayed one night in it. Three storeys of chambers and terraces around a courtyard, and you can walk almost all of it unsupervised, which is rare for a building this size.

Kandariya Mahadev Temple

Attraction

Khajuraho

The largest temple at Khajuraho, built around 1030 and thirty-one metres high, with close to nine hundred carvings on it. Only a small fraction are erotic, which surprises most first-time visitors.

Gwalior Fort

Attraction

Gwalior

A vast hilltop fort with palaces, temples and rock-cut Jain sculptures.

Betwa Cenotaphs (Chhatris)

Viewpoint

Orchha

Cenotaphs to the Bundela rulers standing in a row along the Betwa. Best at the end of the day, seen from the far bank, where nobody charges you anything.

Laxminarayan Temple

Attraction

Orchha

Reached by a straight paved path from Ram Raja, and the reason to walk it is the wall paintings inside — Bundela murals in good condition, including scenes of the 1857 fighting and the Jhansi campaign. Usually empty. Ask the caretaker to open the upper chambers.

Lakshmana Temple

Attraction

Khajuraho

An exceptionally preserved 10th-century temple featuring unique stone reliefs detailing medieval military marches and domestic life scenes.

Shravan Tal

Attraction

Kanha National Park

A historic, natural forest pool basin linked to local oral epics, acting as a critical watering station for tigers and leopards.
