Shah Jahan was imprisoned here by his own son, in a tower with a clear view downriver to the Taj Mahal he had built for his wife.
What you're looking at
A walled fortress-palace on the Yamuna, rebuilt in red sandstone by Akbar from 1565 and much altered by his successors. Behind two kilometres of double walls sit audience halls, marble palaces, mosques and gardens from three generations of Mughal rulers.
Why it matters
Agra Fort was the seat of Mughal government for over a century, and it shows the dynasty's architecture changing in one place: Akbar's robust red sandstone with Hindu-influenced brackets, then Shah Jahan's white marble refinement layered on top. Much of the interior was later demolished by the British for barracks.
Look for these

Musamman Burj
The octagonal marble tower where Shah Jahan spent his last years under house arrest. The view of the Taj from it is the reason the story is remembered.

Akbar's red against Shah Jahan's white
Walk from the Jahangiri Mahal to the Khas Mahal and the change is abrupt — heavy carved sandstone giving way to inlaid marble in a single generation.

Hindu forms in a Mughal palace
The Jahangiri Mahal is full of brackets, chhatris and carved beams borrowed straight from Rajput building. Akbar employed Hindu craftsmen and let them work in their own idiom.

The double walls and moat
Two concentric ramparts with a moat between them, and a bent entrance that forces attackers to turn. This was a working fortress before it was a palace.

The Nagina Masjid
A small private marble mosque built for the women of the court, easy to miss and usually empty.
Before you go
- Only about a quarter of the fort is open — the rest is still military.
- Pair it with the Taj; the Musamman Burj view makes far more sense once you have been to the tomb.
- Go late afternoon when the sandstone turns deep red.
- There is an evening sound-and-light show.
- October to March; the courtyards are unshaded.
