Group of Monuments at Pattadakal
Karnataka
Photos
Northern and southern temple architecture standing side by side in one field — the Chalukyas were trying both, at the same time, to see what worked.
What you're looking at
A group of eight 7th and 8th century Chalukya temples on the bank of the Malaprabha in northern Karnataka, where kings were crowned. Four are built in the southern Dravida style with stepped pyramidal towers; four in the northern Nagara style with curved spires. They were built within a century of each other.
Why it matters
Pattadakal is where Indian temple architecture was consciously experimented with. Nowhere else can you stand in one place and compare the two great traditions built by the same patrons, in the same stone, at the same moment. Inscriptions name the architects — the Virupaksha temple credits one Gunda, given the title of master builder.
Look for these
01
Two tower shapes in one view
Stand mid-site: the tall curved spires are Nagara, the stepped pyramids are Dravida. Once you can tell them apart the whole place makes sense.
02
Virupaksha, the model for Kailasa
Built to mark a victory over the Pallavas, and reportedly studied by the builders of the Kailasa temple at Ellora a generation later.
03
Signed by its architects
Inscriptions on several temples name the sculptors and the master builder — very unusual for the period.
04
Ramayana and Mahabharata panels
The Virupaksha and Mallikarjuna pillars carry continuous narrative reliefs. Follow one round a pillar and the story unfolds.
05
Papanatha's confusion
It starts in one style and finishes in the other, apparently changing plan mid-build. The join is visible.
Before you go
- Pattadakal, Badami and Aihole are the three-site Chalukya circuit and sit within about 25 km of each other. Do all three.
- Badami's cave temples and Aihole's Durga temple are the natural companions.
- Badami is the usual base; the nearest railhead is Badami.
- October to February. Summer in this part of Karnataka is severe.
- The site is compact — an hour and a half is enough, but the circuit needs two days.
