Great Living Chola Temples
Tamil Nadu
Photos
Living is the important word. These are not ruins — worship has continued in them without a break for a thousand years.
What you're looking at
Three Chola temples in Tamil Nadu inscribed as one site: Brihadisvara at Thanjavur (1010 CE), Brihadisvara at Gangaikondacholapuram (about 1035), and Airavatesvara at Darasuram (12th century). All three are Shiva temples built at the height of Chola power.
Why it matters
The Thanjavur temple was the tallest structure in India when it was completed, and its granite tower is topped by an enormous capstone whose placement is still debated. The Cholas ran an empire that reached Southeast Asia, and these temples were its administrative and economic centres as much as its religious ones — the inscriptions on the walls are records of endowments, land grants and salaries.
Look for these
01
The tower's shadow
There is a persistent claim at Thanjavur that the vimana's shadow never falls outside the base at noon. Look up at the capstone — around 80 tonnes, placed 60 metres up in the 11th century.
02
Walls covered in writing
The base of the Thanjavur temple is dense with Tamil inscriptions listing donations, temple staff and their pay. It is an economic archive carved into a building.
03
The enormous Nandi
A single block of granite carved into Shiva's bull, facing the sanctum. Among the largest monolithic Nandis in India.
04
Airavatesvara's stone steps that sing
At Darasuram the smaller scale allows far finer carving, including a set of musical steps and a chariot-wheeled mandapa.
05
Gangaikondacholapuram is nearly empty
Built to commemorate a campaign to the Ganges, it gets a fraction of Thanjavur's visitors and is arguably the more graceful building.
Before you go
- The three sit within about 70 km of each other; Thanjavur is the natural base.
- These are active temples — shoes off, and the granite gets very hot by midday. Carry socks.
- Dress code is enforced at the inner areas; shoulders and knees covered.
- Temples close for a few hours in the afternoon. Morning or evening.
- November to February is the comfortable season.
