3 Idiots Point

Viewpoint

3 Idiots Point

Pangong Tso, Leh & Ladakh

A stretch of shore with a signboard, a scooter and a chair set out for photographs, because a film ended here in 2009. There is a charge. The lake is the same lake a kilometre in either direction, with nobody on it.

Agatti Lagoon

Experience

Agatti Lagoon

Agatti Island, Lakshadweep

A shallow turquoise lagoon for snorkelling and kayaking.

Aina Mahal

Attraction

Aina Mahal

Bhuj, Gujarat

The palace of mirrors, built around 1750 for Rao Lakhpatji of Kutch. His master craftsman Ram Singh Malam had trained abroad and came back to build in the local idiom but finish it in glass, mirror and tile — the Hall of Mirrors, the Pleasure Hall and the state apartments on the first floor, the durbar and marriage halls above. It is a museum now, and the oddest thing in it is the Europeanerie collection Lakhpatji accumulated: clocks, wares, mechanical toys and European paintings, all shipped into a desert court. It stands beside Prag Mahal in the Darbargadh.

Ajitnath Jain Temple

Attraction

Ajitnath Jain Temple

Taranga Hills, Gujarat

Built around 1161 under the Solanki king Kumarpal and roughly a hundred and forty feet high, in local sandstone. The Ajitnath inside is cut from one block, a little over five metres. Taranga is a quiet hill and this is close to the only thing on it.

Amaravati Stupa

Attraction

Amaravati Stupa

Amararama (Amaravati), Andhra Pradesh

The ruins and museum of a great ancient Buddhist stupa nearby.

Amareswara Temple

Attraction

Amareswara Temple

Attraction

Anasakti Ashram

Kausani, Uttarakhand

The hilltop ashram where Mahatma Gandhi stayed, with a small museum and panoramic views.

Apatani Villages

Experience

Apatani Villages

Ziro Valley, Arunachal Pradesh

Hong is the largest of them and Hija among the oldest. The older Apatani women have facial tattoos and wooden nose plugs — a practice that ended in the 1970s, so this is the last generation carrying it. Ask before photographing anyone.

Araku Coffee Plantations

Experience

Araku Coffee Plantations

Araku Valley, Andhra Pradesh

Tribal-grown coffee estates and a museum on the valley's coffee heritage.

Arichal Munai (Land's End)

Viewpoint

Arichal Munai (Land's End)

Dhanushkodi (Rameswaram), Tamil Nadu

The tip where the Bay of Bengal meets the Indian Ocean.

Banasura Sagar Dam

Experience

Banasura Sagar Dam

Wayanad, Kerala

The largest earth dam in India, and the islands in the reservoir are hilltops left standing when the water rose. Speedboats run from the shore. There is a long uphill walk from the car park that nobody warns you about.

Bangaram Lagoon

Experience

Bangaram Lagoon

Bangaram Island, Lakshadweep

A shallow lagoon inside the reef, calm enough to snorkel straight off the beach. Diving is run through the single resort on the island.

Batal Transit Base

Accommodation Area

Batal Transit Base

Chandratal Lake, Himachal Pradesh

The historic highway rest stop located 14 kilometers away, famous for basic stone shelters and mountain tracking updates.

Bee Falls

Attraction

Bee Falls

Pachmarhi, Madhya Pradesh

A popular waterfall with a bathing pool amid the forest.

Betwa Cenotaphs (Chhatris)

Viewpoint

Betwa Cenotaphs (Chhatris)

Orchha, Madhya Pradesh

Cenotaphs to the Bundela rulers standing in a row along the Betwa. Best at the end of the day, seen from the far bank, where nobody charges you anything.

Billing Take-off Point

Experience

Billing Take-off Point

Bir Billing, Himachal Pradesh

Billing is the launch meadow for Bir's paragliding: a grassy shoulder at roughly 2,400 m, about 14 km and a slow 45-minute jeep climb north of Bir village. Pilots lay out their wings here and step off into the Kangra Valley, with the landing ground at Chowgan on Bir's southern edge, close to 1,000 m below. A standard tandem flight lasts around 15 to 30 minutes depending on conditions; experienced cross-country pilots use the same ridge for flights of several hours. The flying season runs from mid-September through October, when thermals are most reliable, with some flying into November and a second window in spring. The site effectively closes through the monsoon. Bir-Billing hosted the Paragliding World Cup in 2015 — the first time the event was held in India — and is widely described as the country's paragliding capital. You do not have to fly to come up. Billing is a rewarding half-day trip on its own for the view across the Dhauladhar range, and it is a popular spot for camping and stargazing.

Bir Tibetan Colony

Attraction

Bir Tibetan Colony

Bir Billing, Himachal Pradesh

A Tibetan settlement with colourful monasteries, a stupa and Tibetan cafes.

Borra Caves

Attraction

Borra Caves

Araku Valley, Andhra Pradesh

Million-year-old limestone caves with dramatic stalactite formations.

Bundi Palace & Chitrashala

Attraction

Bundi Palace & Chitrashala

Bundi, Rajasthan

The Chitrashala is an open courtyard gallery of Bundi-school murals, mostly Krishna scenes, in blue and green. It has its own entrance and is often unattended. The palace above is largely unrestored and overgrown.

Cave 1 (Padmapani Fresco)

Attraction

Cave 1 (Padmapani Fresco)

Ajanta Caves, Maharashtra

A grand Mahayana vihara cave housing the globally celebrated, masterpiece wall painting of Bodhisattva Padmapani holding a blue lotus.

Cave 26 (Mahaparinirvana)

Attraction

Cave 26 (Mahaparinirvana)

Ajanta Caves, Maharashtra

A chaitya hall with a seven-metre reclining Buddha cut along the left wall at the moment of death. Easy to walk past — the sculpture sits back in the aisle, not on the axis.

Chalal Village Trail

Experience

Chalal Village Trail

Kasol, Himachal Pradesh

An easy riverside walk from Kasol to the quiet hamlet of Chalal, lined with chilled cafes and music hostels.

Chandrashila Peak

Attraction

Chandrashila Peak

Chopta (Tungnath), Uttarakhand

The summit above Tungnath at about 4,000 metres, another kilometre and a half past the temple. On a clear morning you see Nanda Devi, Trisul and Chaukhamba from it. Start in the dark for sunrise.

Charlotte Lake

Attraction

Charlotte Lake

Matheran, Maharashtra

The primary natural water reservoir basin on the plateau, surrounded by dense evergreen forests and hosting an ancient temple shrine.
