Adhai Din Ka Jhonpra

Attraction

Adhai Din Ka Jhonpra

Ajmer Sharif Dargah, Rajasthan

Commissioned by Qutb-ud-Din Aibak in 1192 and finished by 1199, with a screen of arches added by Iltutmish in 1213 — which makes it one of the oldest surviving mosques in India and the oldest standing building in Ajmer. The name means "shed of two and a half days". Hindu masons built most of it under Afghan supervision, and it shows: the pillars are Indian work, reused and recut, no two quite alike. It stopped being used as a mosque in 1947 and is a protected monument now, a short climb above the dargah. Usually quiet, even when the dargah below is not.

Adi Ganga Canal Front

Viewpoint

Adi Ganga Canal Front

Kalighat Kali Temple, West Bengal

The historic old riverbed channel steps located adjacent to the temple, tracking centuries of ritual bathing traditions.

Adinath Temple

Attraction

Adinath Temple

Shatrunjaya Hill, Gujarat

The grandest and most sacred primary temple inside the summit enclave, dedicated to the first Jain Tirthankara. It features detailed white marble pillars, friezes, and a jewel-encrusted deity image.

Akshardham Temple Complex

Attraction

Akshardham Temple Complex

Gandhinagar, Gujarat

A BAPS Swaminarayan temple complex of twenty-three acres, conceived by Yogiji Maharaj and built under Pramukh Swami Maharaj over thirteen years. The mandir at its centre uses six thousand tonnes of pink sandstone brought from Rajasthan. Akshardham is the abode of Swaminarayan, where followers hold the soul goes after liberation, which is what the complex is named for. On 24 September 2002 two Lashkar-e-Taiba gunmen attacked it and killed thirty-three worshippers; security has been heavy ever since, and phones, bags and cameras do not go past the gate.

Bala Hanuman Temple

Attraction

Bala Hanuman Temple

Banke Bihari Temple

Attraction

Banke Bihari Temple

Mathura & Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh

Vrindavan's most beloved Krishna temple, famous for its lively darshan.

Bankey Bihari Temple

Experience

Bankey Bihari Temple

Mathura & Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh

The curtain is drawn across the deity every minute or two rather than left open — the tradition holds that an unbroken gaze is too much to bear. There are no bells here either. Very crowded, and the Mangala aarti happens only once a year.

Beatles Ashram

Experience

Beatles Ashram

Rishikesh, Uttarakhand

Chaurasi Kutia, where the Beatles stayed in 1968, four kilometres upriver. A ruin now — roofless meditation cells covered in murals painted by later visitors — and better for it. Ticketed, inside Rajaji reserve.

Bet Dwarka

Attraction

Bet Dwarka

Dwarka, Gujarat

An inhabited island at the mouth of the Gulf of Kutch, two kilometres off Okha and twenty-five north of Dwarka — eight kilometres long and about two wide. Its other name, Shankhodhar, comes from the conch shells these shallows produce, and a conch is what most pilgrims carry home. Hindu tradition places Krishna's own residence on the island, which is why the boats run full rather than empty. Until the Sudarshan Setu opened, the ferry from Okha was the only way across and the crossing was half the experience. Bring water; there is very little shade.

Bhagirath Shila

Attraction

Bhagirath Shila

Gangotri, Uttarakhand

A slab of rock beside the temple where Bhagirath is said to have sat to bring the Ganga down. A minute from the main shrine.
