Coorg (Madikeri), Karnataka
About seventy feet, dropping through a private coffee estate and seen from a suspension bridge rather than from the base. Full in the monsoon and a trickle by March.
Shatrunjaya Hill, Gujarat
The grandest and most sacred primary temple inside the summit enclave, dedicated to the first Jain Tirthankara. It features detailed white marble pillars, friezes, and a jewel-encrusted deity image.
Taranga Hills, Gujarat
Built around 1161 under the Solanki king Kumarpal and roughly a hundred and forty feet high, in local sandstone. The Ajitnath inside is cut from one block, a little over five metres. Taranga is a quiet hill and this is close to the only thing on it.

The gondola's upper station sits just under four thousand metres and the ridge above it is where the off-piste skiing is. There is snow on the north face even in summer, and the peak is close enough to the Line of Control that the army is present.

Auli, Uttarakhand
A reservoir built purely to feed snow cannons in the years the natural snow fails, which is often. One of the highest artificial lakes anywhere, half a kilometre from the slopes.
A meadow above Pahalgam ringed by pine, reached on foot or on horseback. It was the site of the April 2025 attack on tourists and was closed afterwards; it has not appeared on the lists of spots since reopened, so check the current position locally before counting on it.
Wayanad, Kerala
The largest earth dam in India, and the islands in the reservoir are hilltops left standing when the water rose. Speedboats run from the shore. There is a long uphill walk from the car park that nobody warns you about.
Pachmarhi, Madhya Pradesh
A popular waterfall with a bathing pool amid the forest.
Named after a 1983 Hindi film shot here, which tells you how it is packaged: a fenced, ticketed meadow on the Chandanwari road with the Lidder running through it. Aru, further along, is better and free.

An easy riverside walk from Kasol to the quiet hamlet of Chalal, lined with chilled cafes and music hostels.
Chopta (Tungnath), Uttarakhand
The summit above Tungnath at about 4,000 metres, another kilometre and a half past the temple. On a clear morning you see Nanda Devi, Trisul and Chaukhamba from it. Start in the dark for sunrise.
Matheran, Maharashtra
The primary natural water reservoir basin on the plateau, surrounded by dense evergreen forests and hosting an ancient temple shrine.
Mussoorie, Uttarakhand
A colonial house at the west end of the ridge, seven kilometres out, where built-up Mussoorie stops and the deodar starts. The walk out is better than the building.
Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu
A kilometre of paved cliff path cut in the 1870s, with the plains a long way below and a small entry fee. In mist you will see nothing at all, which happens often — go early, before the cloud comes up the valley.
Chikmagalur, Karnataka
Guided walks and stays on working coffee plantations, with tastings of fresh local brew.
A municipal garden three and a half kilometres from the Mall, with boating and an aviary. Heavily developed and aimed at families rather than anyone after quiet.
