Lathmar Holi (Barsana)

A famous form of Holi in which the women of Barsana playfully beat the men of Nandgaon with sticks (lathis), re-enacting the Krishna-Radha legends.

The festival recreates a charming legend where Lord Krishna from Nandgaon traveled to Barsana to playfully tease Radha and her friends. The women of Barsana took mock offense and used sticks to drive him and his companions out of their village.

Men from Nandgaon travel to Barsana, where they are met by local women who playfully strike their heavy leather shields with thick wooden poles (lathis). The entire event is accompanied by folk songs, standard-bearers, and clouds of colored powder (gulal).

Key traditions include singing specialized 'Samaj' songs in the temple courtyards, sharing 'Thandai' (a traditional milk beverage infused with almonds and saffron), and spraying herbal colored water from brass cylinders.

Participating in this intense, joyful celebration is believed to invoke 'Madhurya Bhava'—a form of devotion where the devotee experiences connection with the divine through the lens of pure, unconditional love and playful affection.

This form of Holi has been practised for centuries in the Braj region, keeping the local Brajbhasha dialect, the traditional songs, and the community structures largely unchanged from one generation to the next.

Lathmar Holi in Barsana is a wild, joyful blur of color and rhythm. The narrow streets are filled with clouds of pink and red powder, turning the air itself into a canvas.
