When it happens
July
Shravan Purnima, the full-moon day of Shravan, falling in late July or August. A lunar rule, so the date moves each year.
Significance
The working calendar of a fishing community turned into a festival, and the most important date of the year for Daman's koli households.
Why it's celebrated
It marks the end of the monsoon and the reopening of the fishing season. The boats have been beached for weeks; on this day the sea is asked to be calm and the fleet goes back out.
How it's celebrated
Families repair nets and repaint the boats in the days before, then dress them with buntings and garlands. Coconuts are broken and cast into the sea after puja at the water's edge, and decorated boats put out together.
Key rituals
Puja at the water's edge, coconuts offered to the sea, boats dressed and taken out.
Beliefs & spiritual meaning
The sea is asked to accept the coconut and to grant a safe season in return.
History & origins
A coastal rite kept along the whole Konkan seaboard, marking the day the fleet can safely return to the water after the southwest monsoon.
