Significance

The Tamil New Year, centred on the Kani — an auspicious tray of fruits and gold viewed first thing in the morning.

Why it's celebrated

Commemorates the day Lord Brahma began his cosmic creation of the universe according to Hindu astronomical texts. It also marks the divine wedding celebrations of Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar in Madurai.

How it's celebrated

Homes are meticulously cleaned and adorned with colorful rice-powder patterns (Kolam) and mango leaves. People dress in traditional silk garments (Veshti and Kanjivaram sarees). A centerpiece dish called Mangai Pachadi is prepared and shared with family members.

Key rituals

On the eve of Puthandu, a tray is arranged with auspicious items: gold, silver coins, fruits, betel leaves, and a mirror, which is the first thing seen upon waking at dawn (Kanni view). Special almanac readings (Panchanga Sravanam) are held at temples in the evening to predict the year's fortunes.

Beliefs & spiritual meaning

The Mangai Pachadi dish combines six distinct tastes (sweet, sour, bitter, salty, spicy, astringent), symbolizing that the upcoming year will bring a mixture of life experiences which one must accept gracefully. Viewing the Kanni arrangement at dawn ensures year-long prosperity.

History & origins

Mentioned in early Sangam literature such as the Nedunalvadai, which places it more than two millennia back. It has grown from a seasonal astronomical festival into a state-wide public holiday celebrating Tamil identity and heritage.

What to expect

The dawn breaks to the auspicious, golden strains of the Nadaswaram oboe echoing from local temples. Courtyards are transformed by geometric white and colored Kolam patterns, glistening with morning dew. Inside kitchens, the sharp aroma of mustard seeds crackling in oil blends with the sweet fragrance of boiling jaggery, creating a warm, deeply comforting sensory introduction to the Tamil New year.
