The highest geographic point in the town perimeter, hosting a manicured park complex famous for panoramic views and paragliding takeoffs.

Deoriatal Lake

Attraction

Deoriatal Lake

Chopta (Tungnath), Uttarakhand

A small lake that holds a reflection of Chaukhamba on a still morning, about two and a half kilometres up from Sari village. Camping on the far bank is permitted and is why most people come.

Dhankar Monastery

Attraction

Dhankar Monastery

Spiti Valley (Kaza), Himachal Pradesh

On a spur of eroding mud cliff between the Spiti and Pin rivers at around 3,900 metres. The old building is genuinely unstable and has appeared on international endangered lists; a newer monastery below now holds the services. Dhankar lake is an hour's climb above.

Dhupgarh

Viewpoint

Dhupgarh

Pachmarhi, Madhya Pradesh

The highest point in the Satpuras, famed for sunset views.

Dilwara Jain Temples

Attraction

Dilwara Jain Temples

Mount Abu, Rajasthan

Five Svetambara Jain temples about two and a half kilometres outside Mount Abu, built between the eleventh and sixteenth centuries in the Solanki style. The oldest, Vimal Vasahi, dates to 1031; later additions were funded by Vastupala, a minister of the Vaghelas. What everyone comes for is the marble — pure white, cut so fine across the domes and ceilings that it looks poured rather than carved, with no two pillars alike. They count among the five great pilgrimage sites of the Svetambara sect and are still run by a religious trust, so they are working temples with temple rules, not monuments.

Doddabetta Peak

Viewpoint

Doddabetta Peak

Ooty (Udhagamandalam), Tamil Nadu

The highest point in the Nilgiris at 2,637 metres, ten kilometres out of Ooty, with a telescope house at the top. On a clear morning you see a long way. By afternoon, most days, you see cloud.

Edakkal Caves

Attraction

Wayanad, Kerala

Two natural stone caves on Ambukuthi Hill housing rare, multi-century old Neolithic rock carvings and petroglyphs.

Gandhi Shikhar

Viewpoint

Gandhi Shikhar

Don Hill Station, Gujarat

The highest point you can walk to on the Don plateau, a short climb off the road with a small monument at the top. Sunrise is the reason to be up there.

Garam Sadak

Experience

Garam Sadak

Dalhousie, Himachal Pradesh

The sunny one of Dalhousie's two linking walks: Garam Sadak gets the light, Thandi Sadak on the far side stays in shade. Both run between Gandhi Chowk and Subhash Chowk, and either takes about half an hour.

Gira Waterfalls

Viewpoint

Gira Waterfalls

Saputara, Gujarat

About thirty metres, on the Ambika near Waghai, and worth the detour only during and just after the monsoon. By February it is a wet rock face.

Gorson Bugyal

Attraction

Gorson Bugyal

Auli, Uttarakhand

A high meadow three kilometres above the ski slopes, and the standard acclimatisation walk from Auli. Under snow January to March; grass and a long view of Nanda Devi the rest of the year.

Government Botanical Garden

Attraction

Government Botanical Garden

Ooty (Udhagamandalam), Tamil Nadu

Laid out in 1848 across fifty-five acres, with a fossilised tree trunk near the middle that is around twenty million years old. The flower show in May is when Ooty is at its most crowded.

Gulmarg Gondola

Experience

Gulmarg Gondola

Gulmarg, Jammu & Kashmir

Two stages: Kongdoori first, then Apharwat. Buy both together and buy early — phase-two tickets are capped daily and go quickly in season. Phase two also shuts often for wind, regardless of what you have paid for.

Guru Dattatreya Paduka Temple

Attraction

Guru Dattatreya Paduka Temple

Girnar Hills, Gujarat

At the very top of Girnar's stair, which everyone counts as 9,999 steps. Dattatreya's footprints are the object of worship, on a rock platform barely wider than the shrine. The ropeway stops well below — the last stretch has to be walked.

Happy Valley Tea Estate

Experience

Happy Valley Tea Estate

Darjeeling, West Bengal

Planted in 1854 and among the oldest gardens in Darjeeling, three kilometres out of town. Plucking runs March to November and there is little to see outside that; the factory closes on Mondays.

Hidimba Devi Temple

Attraction

Hidimba Devi Temple

Manali, Himachal Pradesh

An ancient wooden temple built over a giant rock cavern in a dense cedar forest, featuring unique folk art carvings.

Hikkim Highest Post Office

Experience

Hikkim Highest Post Office

Spiti Valley (Kaza), Himachal Pradesh

At 4,440 metres, opened in 1983, and it does actually work — one postmaster and a bag that goes down to Kaza and out. Postcards from here take weeks. Carry your own; the shop next door may be shut.

HPCA Stadium

Viewpoint

HPCA Stadium

McLeodganj & Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh

One of the highest international cricket grounds anywhere, with the Dhauladhar wall standing directly behind the stands. On non-match days you can usually walk in and look, which is worth ten minutes.

Joshimath

Attraction

Joshimath
