Sesharayar Mandapam

Attraction

Sesharayar Mandapam

Srirangam (Ranganathaswamy Temple), Tamil Nadu

A sixteenth-century hall where each pillar is carved as a rearing horse with an armed rider, cut from a single block. It sits off the main route through the temple, so ask — most visitors never find it.

Shamlaji Vishnu Temple

Attraction

Shamlaji Vishnu Temple

Shamlaji, Gujarat

A Vishnu temple in Aravalli district and one of the busier pilgrimage centres in north Gujarat. The present building is fifteenth or sixteenth century, though it may have been begun in the eleventh in the Chaulukya style; the Vishnu image in the sanctuary is older still, probably seventh or eighth century, and the small temple facing it holds a sixth-century Shiva. The oldest intact structure on the site is the ninth-century Harishchandrani Chauri, with its gateway, off to one side and usually walked past. The fair at Kartik Poornima is when the town fills.

Shatrunjaya Temple City

Attraction

Shatrunjaya Temple City

Palitana (Shatrunjaya), Gujarat

A range of hills above Palitana carrying 865 Jain temples — not one temple with outbuildings but a city of them, built up along the ridge over centuries. Jain tradition holds the site was sanctified when Rishabha, the first Tirthankara, preached from the summit, and that Pundarik Swami, his grandson and chief Ganadhara, attained moksha here. It is among the holiest places in Jainism. Getting up means roughly 3,500 steps and there is no ropeway; pilgrims start before dawn, and nobody stays on the hill overnight, priests included.

Shikharji Parikrama

Experience

Shikharji Parikrama

Shikharji (Parasnath), Jharkhand

The ~27 km sacred ridge trek visiting the tonks of the Tirthankaras.

Shiva Statue & Temple

Attraction

Shiva Statue & Temple

Murudeshwar Beach, Karnataka

One of the world's tallest Shiva statues beside a sea-facing temple.

Shree Jagannath Temple

Attraction

Shree Jagannath Temple

Puri (Jagannath Temple & Beach), Odisha

Twelfth century, with a spire around sixty-five metres high. Hindus only, and no phones or leather past the gate. The flag at the top is changed every day by a man who climbs the spire without ropes — worth waiting for, from outside if you cannot go in.

Somnath Mahadev Temple

Attraction

Somnath Mahadev Temple

Somnath, Gujarat

The first of the twelve jyotirlingas of Shiva, at Prabhas Patan near Veraval on the Saurashtra coast, and one of the most contested sites in Indian history. The Mahabharata and the Bhagavata Purana both name a tirtha here long before archaeology can confirm a building; the earliest datable temple falls somewhere between the first centuries CE and the ninth. It was destroyed and rebuilt repeatedly, beginning with Mahmud of Ghazni's raid in January 1026. The ruins standing at independence were cleared and the present temple built in the Maru-Gurjara style. The sea starts immediately behind it.

Somnath Temple

Attraction

Somnath Temple

Somnath, Gujarat

The grand seaside Jyotirlinga temple of Lord Shiva.

Sound & Light Show

Experience

Sound & Light Show

Somnath, Gujarat

An evening show projected with the temple and sea as backdrop.

Southern Minaret

Viewpoint

Southern Minaret

Jama Masjid (Delhi), Delhi

About a hundred and thirty steps up a tight spiral to the best view of Old Delhi there is. Separate ticket, and the mosque does not permit women to climb unaccompanied — worth knowing before you queue.

Sri Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple

Attraction

Sri Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple

Bhramaramba (Mallikarjuna) Temple, Andhra Pradesh

The adjacent sacred Shiva shrine, allowing pilgrims to touch the Jyotirlinga stone directly during scheduled public darshan hours.

Sri Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir

Experience

Sri Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir

Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh

Opened in January 2024 in pink Rajasthani sandstone, Nagara style, three storeys, with work still finishing around it. Phones and bags are not allowed in, so use the lockers before you join the queue.

Srikalahasti Temple

Attraction

Srikalahasti Temple

Srikalahasti, Andhra Pradesh

An ancient Shiva temple of the wind element, famed for its windless flickering lamp.

St. Thomas Hilltop Shrine

Attraction

Sudarshan Setu & Beyt Dwarka

Experience

Sudarshan Setu & Beyt Dwarka

Dwarka, Gujarat

India's longest cable-stayed bridge leading across the sea to Beyt Dwarka island, the historic residential court of Lord Krishna.

Suraj Kund waterfall

Attraction

Suraj Kund waterfall

Gangotri, Uttarakhand

A fall on the Bhagirathi a few hundred metres from the temple, at its loudest just after the temple opens in spring, when the melt is heavy.

Surya Kund

Attraction

Surya Kund

Yamunotri, Uttarakhand

A boiling spring beside the temple, hot enough that pilgrims lower rice and potatoes into it in cloth bundles and carry them home as prasad. That is the thing to stand and watch.

Takht Sri Damdama Sahib

Attraction

Takht Sri Damdama Sahib

Damdama Sahib (Talwandi Sabo), Punjab

The Takht gurdwara where the final Guru Granth Sahib was compiled.

Patna, Bihar

A sacred Sikh Takht marking the birthplace of Guru Gobind Singh.

Tapt Kund

Attraction

A sulphur hot spring in the temple courtyard, hot enough to need care, where pilgrims bathe before darshan. Separate areas for men and women.

Tawang Monastery

Attraction

India's largest and the world's second-largest Buddhist monastery.

Thanjavur Royal Palace Complex
