Havelock Island, officially Swaraj Dweep, is the most popular island in the Andamans. Radhanagar Beach is the reason most people come — powdery white sand, and the sunsets it is known for — and there is serious scuba diving off the island as well. Turquoise water, coral reefs, kayaking through the mangroves and unhurried beach shacks fill out the rest of it. Elephant Beach is where the diving and snorkelling are done. Honeymooners, divers and backpackers all come for it.

When to go

October to May is ideal, with calm seas and great diving visibility. Monsoon (Jun-Sep) brings rough seas.

Why visit

Radhanagar is the beach the island is known for and it earns it. Ferries from Port Blair sell out in season, so book those before you book a room. The diving here is the best in the country, and visibility peaks between December and April.

Cultural notes

The Andamans blend settler communities with protected indigenous tribes; tourism is concentrated on a few islands like Havelock to limit impact, with a strong marine-conservation focus.

How to reach

Fly to Port Blair (Veer Savarkar Airport), then take a ferry (government or private catamaran) to Havelock/Swaraj Dweep, about 1.5-2.5 hours.
