Roughly 85 percent of Great Nicobar sits inside this reserve: a core of about 885 sq km with a 12-km belt of forest buffer around it. UNESCO added it to the Man and the Biosphere network in 2013, on the reasoning that protection lasts longer when the communities living alongside it are part of the arrangement. The island lies 190 km north of Sumatra, which tells you most of what you need to know about reaching it. This is the far end of India, not a side trip from anywhere.
