India's largest surviving stretch of lowland rainforest sits here, 231 square kilometres of dipterocarp forest across Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts, part of a belt that runs on for more than 575 sq km and over into Arunachal Pradesh. Protection came late, a wildlife sanctuary only in 2004 and a national park in 2020, and it doubles as an elephant reserve. It was a study of the white-winged wood duck that first made the case for the place, which tells you what it is really about: go expecting birds and canopy rather than a set-piece safari.

It is marsh country, thick with towering elephant grass, shallow reed swamps and stands of open sal forest. More than two-thirds of the world's surviving one-horned rhinos live here. The park is divided into four safari ranges and run under strict rules. Bagori is the popular one for early-morning elephant-back safaris, which get you close to rhinos grazing in the mist without disturbing them.

Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati, Assam is one of the Shakti Peethas, the sacred shrines of the Divine Mother in the Shakta tradition of Hinduism. According to tradition, this is where the yoni (womb) of Goddess Sati fell when Lord Vishnu's Sudarshana Chakra divided her body. Here the Goddess is worshipped as Kamakhya, and her guardian Bhairava (a form of Shiva) as Umananda. It is counted among the eighteen Ashtadasha Maha Shakti Peethas — the most revered of all the seats of the Goddess. Shakti Peethas are among the holiest pilgrimage sites for devotees of the Goddess, drawing pilgrims especially during Navratri and Durga Puja. Each is tied to the legend of Sati, whose body parts fell across the Indian subcontinent and beyond, sanctifying the ground where they landed.

Majuli

Majuli is a river island in the Brahmaputra that is smaller every year, and going there is partly about seeing something that is going. Erosion has taken more than half the island since the middle of the last century. You reach it by ferry from Nimati Ghat near Jorhat, which takes about an hour and runs to its own schedule rather than yours. What is there is the satras — Vaishnavite monasteries founded from the sixteenth century, where monks still perform the masked dance-dramas the tradition was built on. Kamalabari and Auniati are the ones to see; Samaguri is the satra where the masks themselves are made, and the mask-makers will show you the work if you ask. Rent a bicycle. The island is flat, the distances between satras are short, and the roads are quiet enough that this is genuinely the best way to move. November to March is dry and mild. Come during the monsoon and you will find the ferry unreliable and parts of the island under water — which is, in fairness, the honest version of the place.
