Varkala, in the Thiruvananthapuram district of southern Kerala, does not look like anywhere else on the Indian coast. Most of that coast is flat and sandy; here, near-vertical red laterite cliffs rise straight out of the breaking waves of the Arabian Sea. The paved path along the North Cliff is where everything happens — open-air cafes, seafood grills, yoga centres and handicraft shops. Below it the shore opens into wide sandy bays for swimming, surfing and lying about, and natural mineral springs run down the laterite walls.

When to go

November to March, when the sea is calm enough to swim and every cliff cafe is open.

Why visit

Varkala is a red laterite cliff with a beach underneath and a row of cafes along the top. Take the warnings about the cliff edge seriously — sections of it have come down. Papanasam below is where ashes are scattered, so it is a ritual site as well as a swim.

Cultural notes

The southern stretch is Papanasam Beach, the Redeemer of Sins, and pilgrims still come down to the water to perform rites for their ancestors. The town itself gathers around the centuries-old Janardhanaswamy Temple, a Vaishnavite site of long standing.

How to reach

Trivandrum International Airport is 45 km south. Varkala has its own railway station, Varkala Sivagiri, with regular express trains from Kochi and Trivandrum. Private taxis and local buses run in from the main highway.
