Blending Kerala and Dravidian styles with a towering seven-tier gopuram, it became world-famous when vast treasures were documented in its vaults, ranking it among the wealthiest temples on earth.

When to go

Why visit

The reclining Vishnu is eighteen feet long and you see it through three separate doorways, a section at a time — there is no view of the whole figure. Hindus only, and a dhoti is required for men. The temple's unopened vault is still in court.

Cultural notes

The temple is intimately tied to the Travancore royal family, who still serve as its custodians; the biannual Aarat processions to the sea are grand spectacles.
