Meesapulimala is a summit of about 2,640 m on the Idukki district border, between the Anaimalai and Palani hills near Suryanelli, and it is not a hill you climb on a whim. The Kerala Forest Development Corporation (KFDC) runs the trek, and its brochure lays it out as an overnight. On that programme you report at KFDC's Floriculture Centre on the edge of Munnar at 2 pm and sleep at one of its stays, such as the tented base camp or Rhodo Mansion. The walk starts at 6 the next morning from Rhodo Valley, the last point a jeep can reach. KFDC's timetable gives three hours for the 4 km up and an hour and a half for the 3 km back. A study of the trail done for KFDC in 2026 put the average trek at six hours, and found the path about a metre wide, steep and eroded in places. Plan on six. There is nowhere to eat on the way, and shelter and drinking water are both poor. The way into Rhodo Valley is lined with pines. Above it the path climbs through montane grassland and patches of shola, and Kerala Tourism wrote in 2013 that with luck you may come across elephant, gaur or Nilgiri tahr. From the top you can see Anamudi and the Mattupetty and Anayirangal reservoirs, and look over the border into Tamil Nadu.

When to go

Go on a weekday. Visitor numbers have grown sharply in recent years, above all at weekends and on holidays. Heavy rain has closed the trek on some days, so check with KFDC Munnar before you set out in bad weather. In a Neelakurinji year, ring them before you fix a date. In August 2026, with just scattered flowers out, Onmanorama reported that the mountain would open to the public only once a widespread bloom was confirmed, and that KFDC planned a daily cap.

Why visit

Go for the climb: a hard morning on foot from Rhodo Valley to a grass summit among the highest in the Western Ghats. If you stay the night, try for one of Rhodo Mansion's eight rooms. It stands at 8,000 ft (about 2,440 m). The tented base camp is at 6,000 ft (about 1,830 m), and on KFDC's timetable its guests also need a hired jeep at 5.30 am to reach the start. If you want a view you can drive to, this is the wrong mountain.

Cultural notes

The name is read as meesa, puli and mala: moustache, leopard or tiger, and hill. Seen from the south-west, Kerala Tourism says, the mountain looks like a whiskered tiger.

How to reach

Everything starts in Munnar. KFDC requires trekkers to report to its Floriculture Centre on the outskirts of town for trek arrangements, and from there a jeep, which you hire yourself for the round trip, takes you up to where you are staying. The base camp is 24 km from Munnar via Mattupetty and the Aruvikkad estate, and you can also reach it over the Suryanelli–Kolukkumalai tea estate road. From the base camp it is another 4 to 5 km by jeep to Rhodo Valley, where the walk starts. Do not count on the footpath from Kolukkumalai to the summit: we found no official word that it is open to trekkers. Kerala Tourism's page for the trek gives 108 km from Cochin International Airport, and by road 125 km from Ernakulam or 105 km from Thekkady. On the same page, Aluva station (109 km) is nearer than Ernakulam station (126 km).

Frequently asked questions

What is the best time to visit Meesapulimala?

We cannot name a best month, because we found no weather record for the summit. Go on a weekday: weekends and holidays are when visitor numbers have grown most. In a Neelakurinji year, check with KFDC Munnar before you plan around the bloom.

How do I reach Meesapulimala from Munnar or Kochi?

Through Munnar. Kerala Tourism's page for the trek gives 108 km from Cochin International Airport and 125 km by road from Ernakulam. In Munnar you report at KFDC's Floriculture Centre, and a jeep you hire takes you on: the base camp is 24 km out via Mattupetty and the Aruvikkad estate, and Rhodo Valley, where the walk starts, is 4 to 5 km beyond it.

How high is Meesapulimala?

About 2,640 m (8,661 ft), though 2,624 m and 2,663 m are also quoted. KFDC markets it as the highest trekking peak in South India. On the survey figures Wikipedia cites, Manna Malai, the next peak north, is higher, at 2,659 m.

Can I trek Meesapulimala without KFDC?

KFDC says no. Its Munnar brochure says the trek is 'only offered by KFDC', and Kerala Tourism wrote in 2022 that reaching the top means taking the trek KFDC conducts. A Kerala Responsible Tourism Mission package also advertises a trek to the summit without saying who runs it, so check with KFDC Munnar before you book that. Do not count on the footpath up from Kolukkumalai; we found no official word that it is open. KFDC's own trek is booked and paid for on its ecotourism site.

How difficult is the Meesapulimala trek and how long does it take?

Kerala Tourism calls it hard. On KFDC's timetable you leave Rhodo Valley at 6 am, cover the 4 km to the top by 9 and are back down the 3 km by 10.30. A 2026 study of the trail for KFDC put the average trek at six hours, so allow six. The path is about a metre wide, steep and eroded in places.

How many days do I need for Meesapulimala, and where do I stay?

Plan on one night. That is how KFDC's brochure lays the trek out: you report in Munnar at 2 pm and check out at 1 pm the next day. If you cannot stay, ask KFDC Munnar whether a day trek is on sale. KFDC's places to sleep include Rhodo Mansion (six double and two triple rooms at 8,000 ft, about 2,440 m), a 20-tent base camp at 6,000 ft (about 1,830 m) and a glass-roofed Sky Cottage for up to three and a child.

Is Meesapulimala open in the monsoon?

KFDC's 2026 study says the trek ran all year in the year before it, except for 15 days lost to heavy rain; it does not say which months those were. Ring KFDC Munnar on +91 82898 21408 before you set out in the rains.
