Kadmat Island

9.3 kilometres of coral island with a lagoon 1.5 km wide alongside it, 25 square kilometres of shallow water that is the whole reason to come. The reef carries seagrass and marine turtles nest here, which is why the island is a notified marine protected area. The single village, also called Kadmat, held 5,389 people at the 2011 census; fishing pays for most of the island and farming uses 5% of the land. Tourism is legal, and it is arranged around kayaking, snorkelling and glass-bottomed boat trips. Go for what is under the water; above it the island stays small and quiet, which is the point.
