Idar Hill rises out of the Sabarkantha district of North Gujarat, a rough mass of pink granite boulders balanced one on top of another. On it stands the old hill fort of Idargarh. The climb is a flight of over 700 stone steps, and it takes you up past medieval defensive gateways, rock-cut water cisterns and palaces tucked out of sight — the rock and the fortification working on each other the whole way.

When to go

October to March, when mild days make the exposed stone fort steps a comfortable climb.

Why visit

To hike through a unique landscape of giant granite boulders, explore the ruins of an unconquered medieval hill fortress, and enjoy expansive sunset views over the North Gujarat plains.

Cultural notes

Idar holds a prominent place in local folklore and regional proverbs, historically celebrated as a fortress city so difficult to conquer that winning it was considered an ultimate life achievement ('Ame Idariyo Gadh Jitya Re').
