Hampi is an open-air archeological destination along the banks of the boulder-strewn Tungabhadra River in the Vijayanagara district. Spanning a massive area of over 41 square kilometers, it preserves the ruined remains of the imperial capital of the historical Vijayanagara Empire. The architectural ruins feature a cross-section of palaces, military bastions, symmetric bazaar corridors, and complex stone temples. From the delicate carvings of the Hazara Rama Temple to the stone chariot structure at the Vittala complex, Hampi brings out the high-water mark of medieval South Indian artistic expression. The entire landscape is inscribed as an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

A short history

Hampi was the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, one of the largest and richest empires in Indian history, at its peak in the 14th-16th centuries rivalling contemporary Rome in size. It fell in 1565 after the Battle of Talikota, when a coalition of Deccan sultanates sacked and burned the city over six months, leaving the ruins seen scattered across the landscape today.

When to go

The ideal window to explore Hampi is from October to March when winter daytimes are pleasantly comfortable for open-air trekking.

Why visit

Hampi was the Vijayanagara capital until an alliance of Deccan sultanates sacked it in 1565, and nobody moved back in, which is why so much of it survives. Three days minimum. Hire a bicycle, and cross the river by coracle for the quieter side.

Cultural notes

Flourishing as the legendary capital of the wealthy Vijayanagara Empire between the 14th and 16th centuries, the city was one of the largest and richest metropolises globally during its peak. It synthesized traditional Dravidian forms with Islamic design elements, creating a unique imperial design culture.

How to reach

The closest air link is Jindal Vidyanagar Airport in Toranagallu (35 km away), though Hubli Airport (170 km) is widely used. The primary railway station hub is Hospet Junction, located 13 km away, smoothly connected via regular local transport and taxi lines.

Reaching them means either climbing a famous stairway of nearly 10,000 steps or taking the ropeway up over the forested valleys.

Gulmarg is a bowl of meadow at 2,650 metres in the Pir Panjal, and it does two completely different jobs depending on the month. December to March it is the only serious ski resort in India. The Apharwat face has real off-piste terrain and the snow is dry enough to justify the trip. May to September the snow is gone and it is a meadow full of wildflowers with a golf course on it, one of the highest anywhere. The gondola climbs in two stages. The first, to Kongdoori, almost always runs. The second, up to just under four thousand metres on Apharwat, is frequently closed for wind and its tickets are capped daily — buy both stages early or accept that you may only get the first. If you are skiing off-piste, a guide is not optional. This is avalanche terrain and it has killed people.

Maharashtra

Devbagh & Tarkarli Sangam

Near Malvan, the Devbagh sandbar where the Karli River meets the sea has scuba diving, dolphin trips and the clearest water on the Konkan. The best months to visit are roughly November to February, when seas are calm and skies are clear; the monsoon (June to September) brings rough water and many beach shacks shut. Plan water sports and swimming for the dry winter window.

Jammu & Kashmir

Patnitop

Patnitop is a plateau at 2,024 metres above the Chenab on the Jammu–Srinagar highway, and almost everyone who stops there was on the way somewhere else. As a stop it works well. Deodar forest, open meadows and easy walking — this is not a trekking destination and does not pretend to be. The Skyview gondola at Sanasar runs 2.8 kilometres across the gorge and is the one thing here worth a detour on its own. Snow falls for a few weeks in January and February and the place fills up for it. The rest of winter it is cold and empty. March to June and September to November. Avoid the monsoon, when the highway below is prone to landslides and closures.

Leh & Ladakh

Tso Moriri

Tso Moriri, or Mountain Lake, is an offbeat high-altitude lake tucked away at an astounding elevation of 4,522 metres on the Changtang plateau of southeastern Ladakh. The body of water spans roughly 19 kilometers in length and is entirely fed by glacial meltwater from surrounding snow peaks exceeding 6,000 metres. It is protected under international environmental treaties as part of the Tso Moriri Wetland Conservation Reserve. Unlike Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri is far quieter, less commercialized, and rawer for it. The cobalt-blue waters are flanked by the small nomadic settlement of Korzok, which houses an ancient mud-brick monastery. The surrounding marshy wetlands provide sanctuary to rare and endangered Himalayan migratory birds.

Bhimashankar, deep in the Sahyadri hills of Maharashtra, is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and the source of the Bhima River. Surrounded by a wildlife sanctuary that shelters the rare Indian giant squirrel, it combines a major pilgrimage with lush Western Ghats trekking.

Kaziranga National Park is a vital wildlife conservation sanctuary spanning over 430 square kilometers of alluvial floodplains along the southern banks of the Brahmaputra River in Assam. The unique landscape comprises a dense marshy terrain dominated by towering elephant grass, shallow reed swamps, and open sal forest canopies. The national park is known for hosting over two-thirds of the world's entire surviving population of the endangered Great Indian One-Horned Rhinoceros. The reserve floor operates under strict environmental regulations, split systematically into four safari ranges. Bagori range remains popular for early morning elephant-back safaris, allowing close, safe tracking lines to observe rhinos grazing peacefully in the high morning mists.

Mysuru (Mysore Palace)

Mysuru is a small, orderly, easy city, and it has the one palace in India that is worth seeing lit up. Mysore Palace switches its exterior lights on for a short window on Sunday evenings and through Dasara — around a hundred thousand bulbs on the outline of the building. Check the current timings locally, because they change, and be there before it happens rather than after. Inside, the Durbar Hall and the marriage pavilion are the rooms to slow down in. Photography is not allowed in the interior and shoes come off at the entrance. Chamundi Hill above the city is the standard sunset trip. The steps up — around a thousand of them — are a better way to arrive than the road, and the Nandi bull two-thirds of the way up is the reason to walk rather than drive. Devaraja Market is the working market: flowers by the kilo, sandalwood, bananas in a dozen varieties. Go in the morning while it is being restocked. Dasara in September or October is the city at full volume, with a caparisoned elephant procession. It is also when every room is booked. October to February otherwise.
