Shatrunjaya Hill rises above the Shatrunjaya River near Palitana town in Bhavnagar district, and no other mountain in the world carries anything like what stands on top of it: a fortified complex of more than 860 carved marble temples, built over the course of a millennium. The Jain community holds the whole hill to be sacred ground, and no vehicle goes past the base — pilgrims and travellers climb roughly 3,500 stone steps to reach the temples at the summit.

When to go

November to February. The cool, crisp winter is what makes the long climb up manageable before the day heats up.

An entire mountain ridge crowded with intricate white marble shrines — fine stone masonry, and a deep silence over all of it.

Cultural notes

Shatrunjaya is Jain architecture and Jain spiritual life at their highest. Out of deep respect for what the hill stands for, Palitana at its foot became the first city in the world to be all-vegetarian by law.

How to reach

By Road: The hill is roughly 60 km from Bhavnagar city. By Train: Palitana has a station on the regional line, while Bhavnagar Terminus connects to the national network. By Air: Bhavnagar Airport is the closest domestic option, 65 km away.

The heritage walk from Swaminarayan temple to Jama Masjid takes a couple of hours and goes through the pols — dense residential quarters, each historically one community, with shared courtyards, carved wooden facades and bird feeders on tall poles. Doing this without a guide means missing all of it, because the pols look like ordinary lanes from outside. The Sidi Saiyyed mosque's stone jaali — the tree-of-life screen — is the image the city is known for, and it takes five minutes to see. The Adalaj stepwell, half an hour out, takes longer and gives more. Gandhi's Sabarmati Ashram is plain and unglamorous by design. Sit in it for a while rather than walking through. Gujarat is a dry state; alcohol is not served. The city eats vegetarian extremely well as a result — the Gujarati thali here is one of India's great meals. November to February.
