Mechuka (Menchukha) is a remote, wide-floored valley in the Shi Yomi district of Arunachal Pradesh near the border, ringed by pine-clad mountains at around 1,900 metres. Long isolated and only recently opened to travellers, it is home to Memba and Tibetan Buddhist culture and the centuries-old Samten Yongcha monastery.

When to go

March to October is best; spring and autumn are clear and pleasant, while winter is very cold.

Why visit

A wide flat valley on the Siyom at about 1,900 metres, close enough to the Line of Actual Control that the army is a visible part of daily life. Samten Yongcha on the ridge is a few hundred years old. Arunachal needs an Inner Line Permit, and the roads in are slow.

Cultural notes

Mechuka is home to the Memba and Tagin communities and blends Tibetan Buddhist and indigenous traditions in a strikingly remote setting.

By Road: Mechuka is reached by a long mountain drive from Aalo (Along), roughly 180 km. By Air and Train: Dibrugarh in Assam is the nearest major airport and railhead; an Inner Line Permit is required.

May to September the snow is gone and it is a meadow full of wildflowers with a golf course on it, one of the highest anywhere. The gondola climbs in two stages. The first, to Kongdoori, almost always runs. The second, up to just under four thousand metres on Apharwat, is frequently closed for wind and its tickets are capped daily — buy both stages early or accept that you may only get the first. If you are skiing off-piste, a guide is not optional. This is avalanche terrain and it has killed people.

Considered an entirely holy landscape by the Jain community, no vehicles are permitted past the base database, requiring pilgrims and travelers to scale approximately 3,500 stone steps to reach the mountaintop complex.

The Girnar Hills rise outside Junagadh, an old volcanic range whose highest point, Gorakhnath Peak, reaches 1,031 metres — the highest in Gujarat. Wrapped in the dry-deciduous forest of the Gir landscape, the hills are a shared sacred site, with Jain marble temples and Hindu shrines near the top. Reaching them means either climbing a famous stairway of nearly 10,000 steps or taking the ropeway up over the forested valleys.

Ziro is a valley of rice paddies ringed by pine hills, and it is the home of the Apatani — one of the few communities in India who terrace-farm rice and fish in the same flooded field. The farming is the thing to understand here. The Apatani irrigate paddy and raise fish in the same water, without machinery, on a system worked out over centuries. Walk out into the fields around Hong or Hija in the early morning and you will see it running. Older Apatani women wear facial tattoos and large nose plugs — the practice was abandoned decades ago, so the last generation carrying it is now elderly. It is a difficult thing to photograph well and an easy thing to photograph rudely. Ask, and accept no. The Ziro Festival of Music happens in late September, brings a few thousand people to a valley with limited beds, and transforms the place for a weekend. Whether that is the version you want is a real question. Arunachal Pradesh requires an Inner Line Permit for Indian nationals and a Protected Area Permit for foreign nationals; arrange it before you travel. Come March to October.

Ranging from tropical forest to snow-capped peaks, it is the only park in India believed to host four big cats - tiger, leopard, clouded leopard and snow leopard - along with the rare red panda and hoolock gibbon.
