White Rann of Kutch
The vast white salt desert, best in winter
city · Gujarat
Bhuj is the historic capital of the Kutch district.
Bhuj is the historic capital of the Kutch district. Highly resilient following major earthquake eras, it is a maze of royal palaces, historic stepwells, and ancient markets, serving as the ultimate jumping-off point into the vast salt flats of the Great Rann of Kutch.
November to February is the peak window, with cold desert nights and coordinating with the world-famous Rann Utsav cultural festival.
Bhuj was flattened by the 2001 earthquake and the repair work is still going — the Aina Mahal and Prag Mahal are open, and you can see what was lost. The reason to base here is the craft villages: Ajrakhpur for block printing, Nirona for rogan work and copper bells, Bhujodi for weaving.
The region features a mosaic of semi-nomadic pastoralist tribes, each maintaining fully distinct dress codes, lifestyle patterns, and traditional round mud-house architecture called 'Bungas'.
By Air: Bhuj Airport (BHJ) operates regular domestic flights. By Train: Bhuj Railway Station handles direct trains from major hubs. By Road: Well-connected to Rajkot and Ahmedabad via wide highways.
