Somnath is an ancient coastal spiritual town known for the legendary Somnath Temple, revered as the very first among the twelve sacred Jyotirlinga shrines of Lord Shiva. Rebuilt meticulously several times across history following various destruction eras, the shore temple stands as an eternal beacon of resilience directly over the crashing waves of the Arabian Sea.

A short history

Referenced in the Rigveda and the Puranas, Somnath was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt over a millennium, most famously plundered by Mahmud of Ghazni in 1024 and later by Mughal and Portuguese forces. The current structure was rebuilt after independence, a project championed by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and completed in 1951, making it as much a monument to modern India's resolve as to ancient devotion.

Somnath Mahadev Temple

The first of the twelve jyotirlingas of Shiva, at Prabhas Patan near Veraval on the Saurashtra coast, and one of the most contested sites in Indian history. The Mahabharata and the Bhagavata Purana both name a tirtha here long before archaeology can confirm a building; the earliest datable temple falls somewhere between the first centuries CE and the ninth. It was destroyed and rebuilt repeatedly, beginning with Mahmud of Ghazni's raid in January 1026. The ruins standing at independence were cleared and the present temple built in the Maru-Gurjara style. The sea starts immediately behind it.

The Adalaj stepwell, half an hour out, takes longer and gives more. Gandhi's Sabarmati Ashram is plain and unglamorous by design. Sit in it for a while rather than walking through. Gujarat is a dry state; alcohol is not served. The city eats vegetarian extremely well as a result — the Gujarati thali here is one of India's great meals. November to February. April and May routinely pass forty-two degrees.
