Chaumukha Adinath Temple

Attraction

Chaumukha Adinath Temple

Ranakpur Jain Temple, Rajasthan

Chaturmukha Dharana Vihara, the four-faced temple — begun in the fifteenth century by Dharna Shah, a local Jain merchant, and dedicated to Adinath, the first Tirthankara of the present cycle. It is one of the largest Jain temples in India and the principal Svetambara pilgrimage site in this part of Rajasthan. The count everyone quotes is 1,444 marble pillars, and the claim that no two are carved alike holds up better than most such claims. Four entrances face four directions onto four images of Adinath. A working temple: leather off at the gate, and hours for visitors are set by the trust.

Chennakeshava Temple (Belur)

Attraction

Chennakeshava Temple (Belur)

Belur & Halebidu, Karnataka

Hoysala work from 1117, cut in soapstone, which holds detail granite will not. The forty-two bracket figures under the eaves are what people come for. Still a working temple, so shoes off, and expect a queue at festival times.

Chinese Fishing Nets

Attraction

Chinese Fishing Nets

Kochi (Fort Kochi), Kerala

Cantilevered nets worked by four to six men on a counterweight, along the Fort Kochi seafront. Fewer operate every year and some are now only frames. They are lowered at sunset, which is also when the crowd arrives.

City Palace

Attraction

City Palace

Udaipur, Rajasthan

The largest palace complex in Rajasthan, built over nearly four hundred years by successive Mewar rulers. Udai Singh II began it in 1553, when he moved his capital from Chittor to the new city of Udaipur, and every ruler after him added to it — which is why it reads as a run of connected palaces rather than one building. It stands on a ridge on the east bank of Lake Pichola, so the courtyards look down onto the water and across to the island palaces. Glass and mirror work, mosaic courtyards and the Mewar collection are inside; boats to Jag Mandir leave from below it.

Cloud's End

Attraction

Cloud's End

Mussoorie, Uttarakhand

A colonial house at the west end of the ridge, seven kilometres out, where built-up Mussoorie stops and the deodar starts. The walk out is better than the building.

College Street & Coffee House

Market

College Street & Coffee House

Kolkata, West Bengal

The historic book-market street and famed Indian Coffee House.

Company Garden

Attraction

Company Garden

Mussoorie, Uttarakhand

A municipal garden three and a half kilometres from the Mall, with boating and an aviary. Heavily developed and aimed at families rather than anyone after quiet.

Crawford Market

Market

Crawford Market

Mumbai, Maharashtra

A historic colonial-era wholesale market complex enclosed by standard norman-gothic architecture, popular for fruits, spices, and clothing.

Cubbon Park

Viewpoint

Cubbon Park

Bengaluru (Bangalore), Karnataka

A vast green lung in the city centre, ringed by colonial landmarks.

Dandi Beach

Attraction

Dandi Beach

Navsari, Gujarat

A quiet, historic sandy shoreline along the Arabian Sea. It features a paved sunset walkway, beautiful coastal views, and holds profound national value as the exact spot where Gandhi picked up a lump of natural sea salt to break colonial laws.

Dansborg Fort

Attraction

Dansborg Fort

Tranquebar (Tharangambadi), Tamil Nadu

A 17th-century Danish fort on the beach.

Dargah of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti

Attraction

Dargah of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti

Ajmer Sharif Dargah, Rajasthan

The tomb of the Sufi saint who brought the Chishti order to India in the twelfth century, and the most visited Muslim shrine in the subcontinent — up to twenty thousand people on an ordinary day, and hundreds of thousands during the urs that marks his death anniversary. The complex is more than the tomb: several graves, a mosque, and the enormous cooking cauldrons that are still used. Heads covered, shoes off, and expect to be offered a chadar and a guide at the gate — agree a price or decline plainly. Early morning and late evening are calmer than the middle of the day.

Darjeeling Himalayan Railway

Experience

Darjeeling Himalayan Railway

Darjeeling, West Bengal

The historic UNESCO World Heritage narrow-gauge steam toy train joyride that loops around the scenic Batasia Loop war memorial garden.

Dashashwamedh Ghat

Experience

Dashashwamedh Ghat

Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh

The evening aarti is performed by priests on raised platforms with tiered brass lamps, every day at dusk. It is also the most crowded half hour in Varanasi, and half the audience watches from boats. If you want the ghat rather than the show, come at six in the morning.

Dashashwamedh Ghat & Ganga Aarti

Experience

Dashashwamedh Ghat & Ganga Aarti

Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh

The main ghat where the grand evening Ganga Aarti is performed daily.

Deolo Hill Park

Viewpoint

Deolo Hill Park

Kalimpong, West Bengal

The highest geographic point in the town perimeter, hosting a manicured park complex famous for panoramic views and paragliding takeoffs.

Devaraja Market

Market

Devaraja Market

Mysuru (Mysore Palace), Karnataka

A historic multi-century old wholesale market corridor, famous for towering mounds of colorful kumkum powders, fresh jasmines, and essential oils.

Dhamek Stupa

Attraction

Dhamek Stupa

Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh

A massive 5th-century stupa marking the site of the Buddha's first sermon.

Dilwara Jain Temples

Attraction

Dilwara Jain Temples

Mount Abu, Rajasthan

Five Svetambara Jain temples about two and a half kilometres outside Mount Abu, built between the eleventh and sixteenth centuries in the Solanki style. The oldest, Vimal Vasahi, dates to 1031; later additions were funded by Vastupala, a minister of the Vaghelas. What everyone comes for is the marble — pure white, cut so fine across the domes and ceilings that it looks poured rather than carved, with no two pillars alike. They count among the five great pilgrimage sites of the Svetambara sect and are still run by a religious trust, so they are working temples with temple rules, not monuments.

Diu Fort

Attraction

Diu Fort

Nagoa Beach (Diu), Daman & Diu

A grand Portuguese sea fort near the island's beaches.

Diwan-i-Khas Central Pillar

Attraction

Diwan-i-Khas Central Pillar

Fatehpur Sikri, Uttar Pradesh

The extraordinary hall of private audience featuring a central stone pillar wrapped in intricate lotus-shaped carved brackets.

Doddabetta Peak

Viewpoint

Doddabetta Peak

Ooty (Udhagamandalam), Tamil Nadu

The highest point in the Nilgiris at 2,637 metres, ten kilometres out of Ooty, with a telescope house at the top. On a clear morning you see a long way. By afternoon, most days, you see cloud.

Dwarkadhish Temple

Attraction

Dwarkadhish Temple

Dwarka, Gujarat

The five-storey temple of Krishna as king, with its famous flag changed five times a day.

Dwarkadhish Temple (Jagat Mandir)

Attraction

Dwarkadhish Temple (Jagat Mandir)

Dwarka, Gujarat

The Jagat Mandir — a Krishna temple where he is worshipped as Dwarkadhish, lord of Dwarka, and one of the four Char Dham sites of the Hindu pilgrimage circuit. Five storeys carried on seventy-two pillars, with a spire visible across the town and a flag that is changed by hand several times a day. Archaeology puts the earliest temple on this spot at around 200 BCE; what stands now is largely a fifteenth- and sixteenth-century rebuilding. There are two gates, one to enter by and one to leave by, and a queue at both right through the morning.
