Triveni Ghat

Experience

Triveni Ghat

Rishikesh, Uttarakhand

The main bathing ghat in Rishikesh town, and where the evening aarti happens. Smaller and less performed than Haridwar's, and much easier to sit through.

Triveni Sangam

Experience

Triveni Sangam

Prayagraj (Allahabad), Uttar Pradesh

The sacred confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati, reached by boat.

Tsomgo (Changu) Lake

Attraction

Tsomgo (Changu) Lake

Tsomgo Lake & Nathula Pass, Sikkim

An oval lake at about 3,750 metres, held sacred locally and frozen over in winter. Yaks are brought down to the shore for photographs, at a price agreed before you sit on one. Permits are checked at the barrier below.

Tsuglagkhang Complex

Attraction

Tsuglagkhang Complex

McLeodganj & Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh

The Dalai Lama's main temple and monastery complex, the spiritual centre of McLeodganj.

Tungnath Temple

Attraction

Tungnath Temple

Chopta (Tungnath), Uttarakhand

The highest Shiva temple in the world at around 3,680 metres, and the third of the Panch Kedar. Three and a half kilometres of paved but steep path up from Chopta. Shuts for winter around November.

Turtle Nesting Site

Attraction

Turtle Nesting Site

Agonda Beach, Goa

A protected stretch where olive ridley turtles nest in season.

Turtuk Village

Hidden Gem

Turtuk Village

Nubra Valley, Leh & Ladakh

A beautiful, authentic Balti culture village opened to tourists recently, located just kilometers away from the Line of Control.

Ukhimath

Attraction

Ukhimath

Chopta (Tungnath), Uttarakhand

The winter seat of the Kedarnath deity, twenty-nine kilometres down the valley. From November to April the idol is worshipped here instead, which makes this the place to come in the months the high temples are closed.

Umaid Bhawan Palace

Attraction

Umaid Bhawan Palace

Jodhpur, Rajasthan

One of the largest private residences in the world — three hundred and forty-seven rooms in Jodhpur's yellow sandstone. Ground was broken in November 1929 and the building was finished in 1943, and it was a famine-relief scheme as much as a palace: it was commissioned to put a drought-stricken region back into paid work. It is named for Maharaja Umaid Singh and is still the principal residence of the Jodhpur royal family. Part is run as a Taj hotel and part is a museum, which is the only section open to visitors — the rest is a private home, and reads like one.

Umngot River (Dawki)

Experience

Umngot River (Dawki)

Dawki & Mawlynnong, Meghalaya

The famously transparent river where boats appear to float on air; popular for boat rides and riverside camping.

Uparkot Fort

Attraction

Uparkot Fort

Junagadh, Gujarat

An ancient hilltop citadel believed to have been founded originally around 319 BCE, featuring deep stepwells, rock-cut Buddhist caves, and massive old battle cannons.

Valley of Flowers

Viewpoint

Valley of Flowers

Kevadia (Ekta Nagar), Gujarat

A landscaped garden of about twenty-four hectares along the Narmada below the Statue of Unity — planted rather than wild, and not to be confused with the national park of the same name in Uttarakhand.

Valley of Flowers National Park

Attraction

Valley of Flowers National Park

Hemkund Sahib, Uttarakhand

The valley shares Ghangaria as a base with Hemkund, and the two are the standard pair. Day entry only, no camping inside, and the flowers peak in late July and August.

Vasco da Gama Monument

Attraction

Vasco da Gama Monument

Kappad Beach, Kerala

A pillar marking the 1498 landing of the Portuguese explorer.

Vasudhara Falls

Attraction

Vasudhara Falls

Badrinath, Uttarakhand

A fall of over a hundred metres, a few kilometres past Mana on foot. Local belief holds the water swerves away from anyone impure, which is a good story for a fall the wind blows sideways.

Velavadar Blackbuck National Park

Attraction

Velavadar Blackbuck National Park

Bhavnagar, Gujarat

Thirty-four square kilometres of flat grassland in the Bhal, hugging the Gulf of Khambhat, protected since 1976. It was a hunting ground for blackbuck before it was a park, which is why the habitat is grass rather than forest — and why you actually see the animals: there is nothing for them to hide behind. Blackbuck, the Indian wolf and the lesser florican all have conservation programmes running here. Wastelands and crop fields press in from the north. Go at first light or in the last hour; the middle of the day is heat haze and empty grass.

Vembanad Lake Basin

Attraction

Vembanad Lake Basin

Alleppey (Backwaters), Kerala

India's longest lake expanse, forming the core for luxury houseboat cruising loops and traditional resort properties.

Venna Lake

Experience

Venna Lake

Mahabaleshwar, Maharashtra

Man-made, dug in 1842 to supply the town with water and now given over to pedal boats and pony rides. Crowded and commercial, and perfectly good for an hour with children.

Victoria Memorial

Attraction

Victoria Memorial

Kolkata, West Bengal

A grand white-marble monument and museum set in landscaped gardens.

Vijay Stambh (Tower of Victory)

Attraction

Vijay Stambh (Tower of Victory)

Chittorgarh Fort, Rajasthan

Nine storeys and about thirty-seven metres, raised by Rana Kumbha of Mewar in 1448 to mark his defeat of Mahmud Khilji's Malwa army at Sarangpur. It is dedicated to Vishnu and carved over almost every surface, inside and out, with figures from the Hindu pantheon — James Tod, the first British chronicler of Rajputana, rated it above the Qutb Minar. It stands inside Chittor Fort, itself UNESCO-listed with the other hill forts of Rajasthan. The stair inside is narrow and unlit in places: worth climbing for the view over the plateau, but not if you dislike enclosed spaces.

Vijay Vilas Palace

Attraction

Vijay Vilas Palace

Mandvi Beach (Kutch), Gujarat

A royal seaside palace near Mandvi beach.

Vimal Vasahi Temple

Attraction

Vimal Vasahi Temple

Dilwara Temples (Mount Abu), Rajasthan

The oldest of the Dilwara temples, built in 1031 by Vimal Shah — a Jain minister to the Solanki king Bhima I — and dedicated to Adinath, the first Tirthankara. It is the earliest of a group that grew between the eleventh and sixteenth centuries, and the one that set the pattern: pure white marble worked into concentric rings of dancers, musicians and elephants across the central dome, and pillars carved individually rather than repeated. These are active Svetambara pilgrimage temples managed by a religious trust, not monuments, so visiting hours and dress are set by the temple rather than by the tourism department.

Virasat-e-Khalsa Museum

Experience

Virasat-e-Khalsa Museum

Anandpur Sahib, Punjab

Moshe Safdie's museum, opened in 2011 — a run of sandstone galleries cut into the ridge. Entry is free, it closes on Mondays, and ninety minutes is the minimum walk-through.

Virupaksha Temple

Attraction

Virupaksha Temple

Hampi, Karnataka

The one temple in Hampi that never stopped functioning, with a fifty-metre gopuram over the bazaar street. The temple elephant is walked down to the river to be washed each morning, which is worth getting up for.
