Attraction
Mangala Gauri Temple, Bihar
A riverside temple three kilometres out, built over a stone footprint held to be Vishnu's. Pilgrims come here for ancestral rites; non-Hindus are not admitted to the inner sanctum.
Rajgir, Bihar
A white peace pagoda atop a hill, reached by a ropeway.
Ellora Caves, Maharashtra
The only chaitya hall at Ellora, and its vaulted ceiling is carved in stone to imitate wooden ribs, which is where the carpenter's-cave name comes from. Stand at the back and the sound changes noticeably.
Hampi, Karnataka
The stone chariot is a Garuda shrine rather than a vehicle, and its wheels once turned. The musical pillars in the hall are now roped off — too many people struck them. Come at opening; this is the most visited thing in Hampi.
Kanyakumari Beach, Tamil Nadu
An island memorial reached by ferry, with a giant Thiruvalluvar statue alongside.
Wayanad, Kerala
A protected dry deciduous forest range popular for open jeep tracking tours to spot wild Asian elephant herds.
Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh
The finest cluster including the soaring Kandariya Mahadev temple.
Experience
Rishikesh, Uttarakhand
The most popular 16 km rafting stretch with Grade II–III+ rapids.
Nalanda, Bihar
A memorial to the Chinese monk-scholar who studied at Nalanda.
Viewpoint
Yarada Beach (Vizag), Andhra Pradesh
A clifftop vantage over the beach and the Bay of Bengal.
Kalimpong, West Bengal
On Durpin hill above Kalimpong, consecrated by the Dalai Lama in 1976 and holding a set of scriptures he brought out of Tibet in 1959. From the road outside you see both the Teesta and the Relli valleys.
Hidden Gem
Kevadia (Ekta Nagar), Gujarat
Inside the Shoolpaneshwar sanctuary a short drive from Kevadia, and it only runs properly during and just after the monsoon. There is an eco-campsite at the bottom and a short walk in.
Ziro Valley, Arunachal Pradesh
The valley's emerald wet-rice terraces, especially vivid in the growing season.
