Itanagar is named after this fort: ita is brick in Assamese, so the capital is simply the town of the brick fort. And there is a great deal of brick, 16,200 cubic metres of it, dated to the 14th or 15th century and generally credited to the Chutia kings, whose chronicles have Gauri Narayan building a line of forts along the foot of the hills once his kingdom was secure. Come for the scale of the brickwork and the walk, not for interpretation on the spot. The finds dug out of here are shown at the Jawaharlal Nehru Museum in the same city, so pair the two.
