Coal built this town, and the mines are still the first thing anyone mentions about it, which sits oddly beside the local billing of Chhattisgarh's Jannat. Both are true. Chirmiri stands at 579 m on the bank of the Hasdeo, one of the Mahanadi's most prominent tributaries, with dense forest around it and hills and rivers in every direction. It also happens to be genuinely clean: it topped the Eastern zone in its population band in Swachh Survekshan 2022, scoring 100% on everything from drains to market areas. The weather stays pleasant year round, and trains and roads both reach it.
