The shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi stands at 1,585 metres in the Trikuta Mountains of Jammu. Katra is the base town, and from there millions of pilgrims walk 12 km uphill on a well-built mountain path to reach the cave temple, the Bhawan. Inside the natural rock cave there is no idol. The goddess is worshipped as three natural rock Pindis — Maha Kali, Maha Lakshmi and Maha Saraswati, the creating, sustaining and transforming aspects of Shakti. The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB) runs the whole operation around the clock, with automated crowd-tracking lanes and shelters along the route.
A short history
The cave shrine's legend holds that the goddess, fleeing a demon, meditated here before finally vanquishing him. The temple structure seen today was developed and popularised widely from the 1980s onward as pilgrim infrastructure improved, though local tradition had referenced the shrine for centuries before that.

When to go
The yatra runs year-round, but March to June and September to November are the comfortable months for the mountain walking.
Why visit
Thirteen kilometres uphill from Katra to a cave with three stone pindis in it. You cannot start without a yatra slip from the registration counter. Most people walk through the night to reach the top around dawn; ponies, palanquins and a helicopter all exist if you would rather not.
Cultural notes
Tradition holds that the Goddess chose this cave while escaping a demon. It is among the most visited Shakti Peethas in the subcontinent, and the yatra is a fixture of the regional calendar rather than an occasional event.

The main railhead is Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra Railway Station, with direct trains from the major Indian cities. The closest airport is Jammu Airport, 50 km away, linked to Katra by a multi-lane national highway.
