Valsad, once known as Bulsar, sits at the southern tip of Gujarat on the Arabian Sea. It is known for its mango orchards — the source of much of the region's Alphonso (Hafoos) crop — and mixes an industrial economy with easygoing coastal and temple tourism. With black-sand beaches and the union territory of Daman close by, it is a popular weekend break for visitors from Gujarat and Maharashtra.

When to go

October to March is the season for the coast: comfortable days and a cool sea wind in the evenings.

Why visit

Relax on the black sands of Tithal Beach, visit its seafront temples and colonial-era clock tower, and tour the mango orchards in season.

Cultural notes

Life here is warm and unhurried, Gujarati tradition mixed with the habits of a fishing coast, and it shows across the region at the seasonal harvest festivals and the beachside fairs.

How to reach

By Train: Valsad Railway Station (BL) is a main railhead, handling major express trains from Mumbai and Surat. By Air: Surat Airport is the closest, 90 km north. By Road: The multi-lane National Highway 48 runs through the town.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the sand at Tithal Beach black in color?

Tithal Beach features unique dark black sand due to its high concentration of localized volcanic mineral and iron-oxide deposits rich across the South Gujarat coastline terrain.
