Gokarna is a unique coastal beach town in the Uttara Kannada district of northern Karnataka. Traditionally functioning as a vital, ancient temple pilgrimage city centered around the historic Mahabaleshwar Temple, it has evolved over recent decades into a bohemian backpacker hub. The distinct geography is characterized by rugged green rocky hills of the Western Ghats that crash directly down into the sandy shores of the Arabian Sea. The town features a unique layout split by topology: the historic old city core houses ancient brick temples and traditional Sanskrit learning centers, while a short hike across the rugged green cliffs reveals a series of five isolated, crescent-shaped sandy bays - Kudle, Om, Half Moon, Paradise, and Gokarna Beach. These beaches are populated by rustic bamboo yoga shacks, independent seafood cafes, and quiet beach camping grounds.

When to go

The ideal window to explore Gokarna is from October to March when the winter climate keeps cliff tracking highly pleasant and sea surfing safe.

Why visit

Gokarna is a working temple town that happens to have beaches behind it, and the two barely acknowledge each other. Walk the cliff path from Kudle round to Om and Half Moon — there is no road to most of them.

Cultural notes

Revered scripturally as an essential spiritual bastion dedicated to Shiva, the town houses the multi-century old Mahabaleshwar Temple, which preserves the highly sacred Atmalinga relic. According to oral folklore, the town gets its name, translating to the 'Cow's Ear', from the unique shape of the river confluence basin.

How to reach

The closest air gateway is Goa International Airport in Dabolim (140 km north) or the newly operational Mopa Airport. Gokarna hosts its own rail station (Gokarna Road) on the scenic Konkan Railway network, and is smoothly linked via state highways branching off National Highway 66.
