Gokarna is a coastal town in the Uttara Kannada district of northern Karnataka, and it has been two things at once for decades now. It is an ancient pilgrimage town built around the Mahabaleshwar Temple, and it is a backpacker hub. The green rocky hills of the Western Ghats come down to the Arabian Sea here and stop at the sand. The landscape splits the town in half. The old core holds brick temples and traditional Sanskrit learning centres; a short walk over the cliffs brings you to five crescent bays in a row — Kudle, Om, Half Moon, Paradise and Gokarna Beach — with bamboo yoga shacks, independent seafood cafes and quiet camping grounds on them.

When to go

October to March, when the winter weather makes the cliff walks pleasant and the surf safe.

Why visit

Gokarna is a working temple town that happens to have beaches behind it, and the two barely acknowledge each other. Walk the cliff path from Kudle round to Om and Half Moon — there is no road to most of them.

Cultural notes

Scripture holds Gokarna to be one of the great strongholds of Shiva. Its centuries-old Mahabaleshwar Temple keeps the sacred Atmalinga, and local stories say the name, the Cow's Ear, comes from the shape of the river confluence here.

How to reach

The closest airport is Goa International Airport at Dabolim (140 km north), or the newly opened Mopa Airport. Gokarna has its own station, Gokarna Road, on the Konkan Railway, and state highways branch to it off National Highway 66.

Mysuru is a small, orderly, easy city, and it has the one palace in India that is worth seeing lit up. Mysore Palace switches its exterior lights on for a short window on Sunday evenings and through Dasara — around a hundred thousand bulbs on the outline of the building. Check the current timings locally, because they change, and be there before it happens rather than after. Inside, the Durbar Hall and the marriage pavilion are the rooms to slow down in. Photography is not allowed in the interior and shoes come off at the entrance. Chamundi Hill above the city is the standard sunset trip. The steps up — around a thousand of them — are a better way to arrive than the road, and the Nandi bull two-thirds of the way up is the reason to walk rather than drive. Devaraja Market is the working market: flowers by the kilo, sandalwood, bananas in a dozen varieties. Go in the morning while it is being restocked. Dasara in September or October is the city at full volume, with a caparisoned elephant procession. It is also when every room is booked. October to February otherwise.

The carvings of the Hazara Rama Temple and the stone chariot at the Vittala complex are as fine as medieval South Indian sculpture gets. The whole landscape is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
