Dharmasthala is Karnataka's temple of harmony: a Shiva shrine (Manjunatha) whose priests are Vaishnava Brahmins and whose hereditary guardians, the Heggade family, are Jain — dispensing dharma, justice and food to all comers for over 800 years. Its annadana feeds tens of thousands daily in one of India's great free kitchens, while the 12-metre Bahubali monolith and a vintage-car museum stand nearby on the Netravati's banks.
