Gurudongmar Lake, at around 5,430 metres in northern Sikkim near the Tibet border, is one of the highest lakes in the world and a sacred site for Buddhists and Sikhs alike. Set in a stark, wind-swept high-altitude desert ringed by snow peaks, its crystalline waters are believed to be blessed and never fully freeze.
