The Girnar Hills rise outside Junagadh, an old volcanic range whose highest point, Gorakhnath Peak, reaches 1,031 metres — the highest in Gujarat. Wrapped in the dry-deciduous forest of the Gir landscape, the hills are a shared sacred site, with Jain marble temples and Hindu shrines near the top. Reaching them means either climbing a famous stairway of nearly 10,000 steps or taking the ropeway up over the forested valleys.

When to go

November to February. The cool mountain weather is what makes the long climb up manageable.

Why visit

Take on the climb up thousands of ancient steps (or ride the ropeway), and visit the cluster of medieval Jain and Hindu temples near the summit.

Cultural notes

Girnar matters to worshippers all over India. The 22nd Jain Tirthankara, Neminath, attained salvation on this mountain, and it is also the ground of the Naga Sadhus, the ascetics who come in their lakhs for the annual Bhavnath Fair at Maha Shivratri.

How to reach

By Train: Junagadh Junction (JND) is the main railhead, just 5 km from the mountain base. By Air: Rajkot International Airport is the nearest airport for domestic and international flights, roughly 105 km north. By Road: State highways serve the hills, with frequent GSRTC buses.

Doing this without a guide means missing all of it, because the pols look like ordinary lanes from outside. The Adalaj stepwell, half an hour out, takes longer and gives more. Gandhi's Sabarmati Ashram is plain and unglamorous by design. Sit in it for a while rather than walking through. Gujarat is a dry state; alcohol is not served. The city eats vegetarian extremely well as a result — the Gujarati thali here is one of India's great meals. November to February. April and May routinely pass forty-two degrees.
