Pangong Tso is an endorheic lake at an elevation of approximately 4,225 metres on the high-altitude Changtang plateau of eastern Ladakh. Spanning nearly 134 kilometers in length, roughly one-third of this long lake lies within Indian territory, while the remaining stretch extends directly into Tibet. The water bodies are known for their unique ability to change color shades from azure to turquoise and brilliant indigo dynamically throughout the daytime. The lake basin is backdropped by stark, barren mountains that reflect off the crystal-clear water front like a giant mirror. Despite containing saline brackish water, the lake freezes over completely into heavy sheets of solid ice during severe winter months, creating a surreal arctic wilderness.

When to go

Summer months from June to September provide unblocked road links via Chang La pass and comfortable camping conditions.

Why visit

About a third of Pangong is in India and the rest is in Tibet, which is the fact that makes standing there feel the way it does. Spangmik is where most people stop; Merak and Man are quieter. At 4,350 metres it is worth sleeping a night rather than turning straight round.

Cultural notes

Positioned right along the Line of Actual Control between India and China, the lake carries heavy geostrategic importance and is populated near its banks by the nomadic Changpa herders.

How to reach

Reached from Leh by driving across the high Chang La mountain pass via private or shared four-wheel drive commercial tourist SUVs.
