Attraction
Lonavala & Khandala, Maharashtra
Ancient 2nd-century BCE Buddhist caves housing a colossal rock chaitya prayer hall with masterfully preserved original timber rib arches.
Hidden Gem
Tarkarli (Malvan), Maharashtra
The scenic junction where the Karli river loops into the sea, popular for luxury houseboats and dolphin tracking tours.
Viewpoint
Devbagh & Tarkarli Sangam, Maharashtra
The confluence sandbar where river and sea meet.
Zanskar Valley, Leh & Ladakh
The largest Buddhist monastery complex in Zanskar, cascading beautifully down a steep rocky mountain slope above Padum.
Kasar Devi (Almora), Uttarakhand
An ancient hilltop temple set in a zone known locally for an unusual geomagnetic field.
Experience
Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh
The golden-spired Jyotirlinga temple of Shiva. The approach to it has recently been rebuilt as a wide, barrier-free pedestrian corridor.
One of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, at the heart of the new corridor.
Food
Kasol, Himachal Pradesh
The buzzing main-market strip famous for Israeli and global backpacker food, bakeries and bonfire lounges.
Kaup (Kapu) Beach, Karnataka
A century-old lighthouse with sunset views over the coast.
Kausani, Uttarakhand
A scenic organic tea garden where visitors can walk the rows and buy fresh Kumaon tea.
Kavaratti Island, Lakshadweep
A sheltered lagoon for kayaking, glass-bottom boats and snorkelling.
Kedarnath, Uttarakhand
The ancient stone Jyotirlinga temple of Lord Shiva amid snow peaks.
Loktak Lake, Manipur
The world's only floating national park, last refuge of the rare brow-antlered Sangai deer.
Mussoorie, Uttarakhand
Fifteen kilometres out, and the most crowded thing in the district — the fall now sits inside a ring of ropeways, stalls and concrete steps. Come very early or skip it.
Spiti Valley (Kaza), Himachal Pradesh
Spiti's largest monastery, a thousand-year-old fort-like complex perched at 4,166 m.
Khajjiar, Himachal Pradesh
A 12th-century traditional wooden temple featuring intricate wood carvings of the Pandavas and dedicated to serpent deities.
A small lake in the middle of the meadow with a floating mat of weed drifting across it. It is silting up and smaller than it was, so temper any expectation set by older photographs.
A ledge off the old highway looking across at Duke's Nose, with the ghat railway climbing the far wall. Best in the monsoon when the falls opposite are running, and busy every weekend.
Yamunotri, Uttarakhand
A village across the river from Janki Chatti, and the winter seat of the Yamunotri deity. It has an old Someshwar temple in Garhwali timber and stone, and almost nobody walks over to see it.
Porbandar, Gujarat
The house where Gandhi was born in 1869, and the small museum built beside it for him and Kasturba. Inside are objects he used, life-size portraits of the two of them, old photographs and a library of his writing and of books about his thinking. The ancestral home itself is entered through the museum — narrow rooms, steep stairs, and a marked spot on the floor. It is modest by design, and the contrast with the Statue of Unity three hours away is worth sitting with. World leaders have made the trip; most visitors need about half an hour.
Kohima, Nagaland
The venue of the Hornbill Festival, showcasing Naga tribal life.
Morjim Beach, Goa
One of Goa's prime spots for kitesurfing in season.
Kodachadri, Karnataka
The grassland summit with the Sarvajna Peetha shrine and panoramic cloud-sea sunrise views.
Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu
Man-made, dug in the 1860s, and star-shaped only from the air. The five-kilometre perimeter road is the good part, so hire a bicycle. Boats are rowed or pedalled and the queue at the boat club is long on weekends.
