Attraction
Kohima, Nagaland
Some fourteen hundred graves on the slope where the Japanese advance into India was halted in 1944. The white lines of the tennis court the fighting is named for are still marked out on the terrace. The epitaph at the foot of the cross is what people come to read.

Tso Moriri, Leh & Ladakh
A steep path up the ridge behind Korzok, and from the top you see the whole length of Tso Moriri at once, which you cannot from the shore. A hard twenty minutes at 4,500 metres.
An ancient multi-century old Buddhist monastery overlooking the lake, serving as the cultural heart for the local nomads.

A wide, expansive sandy bay located just a short walk over the ridge from the town, famous for yoga retreats and sunset dining.

A street of spice shops at the Tamil Nadu border, where quality varies enormously. Buy cardamom by smell rather than by label, and be sceptical of anything sold cheaply as vanilla or saffron.
Tosh, Himachal Pradesh
A short, scenic uphill trek from Tosh to the meadow hamlet of Kutla, popular for camping.
Alleppey (Backwaters), Kerala
Rice grown a metre or two below sea level behind earth bunds, one of very few places in the world where that is done. You see it from the boat: the fields sit lower than the water you are on.
Auli, Uttarakhand
A higher, emptier meadow beyond Gorson, twelve kilometres out and a full day there and back. Nothing on the way, so carry water and food.

The historic old city bazaar alley flanking the Charminar, world-famed for authentic hand-crafted stone lacquer bangles and local pearls.
Wilson Hills, Gujarat
At Dharampur, the taluka at the base of the hill, with a large collection of international toys, industrial models, rare tribal musical instruments and local royal artefacts.
Udaipur, Rajasthan
Artificial, dammed in 1362 and named after the village of Picholi — one of a chain of lakes built around Udaipur to hold drinking and irrigation water, not for the view they are now famous for. Four islands sit in it, among them Jag Niwas, which carries the Lake Palace, and Jag Mandir. Boats leave from inside the City Palace and the sunset run is the one people book. In bad drought years this lake has emptied completely, so check the water level before you plan a trip around it.
Chandratal Lake, Himachal Pradesh
A flat walk of roughly two and a half kilometres right round the lake, worth taking slowly at this altitude. The water reads a different colour from each side depending on the light.
Jamnagar, Gujarat
A semicircular fort on an island in Ranmal lake, built in the nineteenth century as famine relief so that people had wages. It is a museum now — Saurashtra pottery, an old armoury — reached by a stone causeway.
Hemkund Sahib, Uttarakhand
A small temple beside the lake at Hemkund, marking where Lakshman is said to have meditated. At 4,600 metres, so do not linger.
Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh
An exceptionally preserved 10th-century temple featuring unique stone reliefs detailing medieval military marches and domestic life scenes.
Mussoorie, Uttarakhand
The highest point in Mussoorie, up in Landour, five kilometres from the Mall. A telescope on a platform, and on a clear morning a line of peaks. Afternoon haze usually closes it down.

Hidden Gem
Spiti Valley (Kaza), Himachal Pradesh
Around 4,400 metres, with a gilded Buddha above the houses and marine fossils in the ground — this was seabed before the Himalaya rose. Children will bring you ammonites to buy. Taking fossils out of India is restricted, so think before you do.

Vadodara, Gujarat
Commissioned in 1878 by Sayajirao Gaekwad III and finished in 1890 to designs by the British architects Charles Mant and Robert Chisholm, named for Sayajirao's first wife Lakshmibai. The grounds run to more than five hundred acres, which makes it the largest private residence in the world, and it is still the home of the Gaekwad family. The style is Indo-Saracenic: Indo-Islamic massing with Renaissance detail. It cost six million rupees, and had indoor lifts and its own telephone exchange when it opened. Part of it is open to visitors; the rest is a house.
