City Palace

Attraction

City Palace

Udaipur, Rajasthan

The largest palace complex in Rajasthan, built over nearly four hundred years by successive Mewar rulers. Udai Singh II began it in 1553, when he moved his capital from Chittor to the new city of Udaipur, and every ruler after him added to it — which is why it reads as a run of connected palaces rather than one building. It stands on a ridge on the east bank of Lake Pichola, so the courtyards look down onto the water and across to the island palaces. Glass and mirror work, mosaic courtyards and the Mewar collection are inside; boats to Jag Mandir leave from below it.

Cloud's End

Attraction

Cloud's End

Mussoorie, Uttarakhand

A colonial house at the west end of the ridge, seven kilometres out, where built-up Mussoorie stops and the deodar starts. The walk out is better than the building.

Coaker's Walk

Experience

Coaker's Walk

Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu

A kilometre of paved cliff path cut in the 1870s, with the plains a long way below and a small entry fee. In mist you will see nothing at all, which happens often — go early, before the cloud comes up the valley.

Coffee Estate Walks

Experience

Coffee Estate Walks

Chikmagalur, Karnataka

Guided walks and stays on working coffee plantations, with tastings of fresh local brew.

College Street & Coffee House

Market

College Street & Coffee House

Kolkata, West Bengal

The historic book-market street and famed Indian Coffee House.

Colomb Bay

Hidden Gem

Colomb Bay

South Goa (Palolem), Goa

A rocky, isolated cove located just south of Palolem, famous for peaceful eco-cafes and unique natural stone pools.

Company Garden

Attraction

Company Garden

Mussoorie, Uttarakhand

A municipal garden three and a half kilometres from the Mall, with boating and an aviary. Heavily developed and aimed at families rather than anyone after quiet.

Corbett Museum

Attraction

Corbett Museum

Jim Corbett National Park, Uttarakhand

The naturalist's former home, now a museum on his life and work.

Corbyn's Cove Water Sports

Experience

Corbyn's Cove Water Sports

Corbyn's Cove (Port Blair), Andaman & Nicobar Islands

Jet-ski and speedboat rides off the cove.

Covelong Surf Point

Experience

Covelong Surf Point

Covelong (Kovalam) Beach, Tamil Nadu

The beach break and surf schools that made the town a surfing hub.

Crank's Ridge

Viewpoint

Crank's Ridge

Kasar Devi (Almora), Uttarakhand

The famous viewpoint ridge above Kasar Devi, lined with cafes and known for sweeping Himalayan panoramas.

Crawford Market

Market

Crawford Market

Mumbai, Maharashtra

A historic colonial-era wholesale market complex enclosed by standard norman-gothic architecture, popular for fruits, spices, and clothing.

Cubbon Park

Viewpoint

Cubbon Park

Bengaluru (Bangalore), Karnataka

A vast green lung in the city centre, ringed by colonial landmarks.

Daksha Mahadev Temple

Attraction

Daksha Mahadev Temple

Haridwar, Uttarakhand

At Kankhal, five kilometres south, and the site the whole Sati story turns on — this is where her father held the sacrifice she died at. Quieter than Har Ki Pauri and more interesting for it.

Dandi Beach

Attraction

Dandi Beach

Navsari, Gujarat

A quiet, historic sandy shoreline along the Arabian Sea. It features a paved sunset walkway, beautiful coastal views, and holds profound national value as the exact spot where Gandhi picked up a lump of natural sea salt to break colonial laws.

Dansborg Fort

Attraction

Dansborg Fort

Tranquebar (Tharangambadi), Tamil Nadu

A 17th-century Danish fort on the beach.

Dargah of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti

Attraction

Dargah of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti

Ajmer Sharif Dargah, Rajasthan

The tomb of the Sufi saint who brought the Chishti order to India in the twelfth century, and the most visited Muslim shrine in the subcontinent — up to twenty thousand people on an ordinary day, and hundreds of thousands during the urs that marks his death anniversary. The complex is more than the tomb: several graves, a mosque, and the enormous cooking cauldrons that are still used. Heads covered, shoes off, and expect to be offered a chadar and a guide at the gate — agree a price or decline plainly. Early morning and late evening are calmer than the middle of the day.

Darjeeling Himalayan Railway

Experience

Darjeeling Himalayan Railway

Darjeeling, West Bengal

The historic UNESCO World Heritage narrow-gauge steam toy train joyride that loops around the scenic Batasia Loop war memorial garden.

Dashashwamedh Ghat

Experience

Dashashwamedh Ghat

Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh

The evening aarti is performed by priests on raised platforms with tiered brass lamps, every day at dusk. It is also the most crowded half hour in Varanasi, and half the audience watches from boats. If you want the ghat rather than the show, come at six in the morning.

Dashashwamedh Ghat & Ganga Aarti

Experience

Dashashwamedh Ghat & Ganga Aarti

Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh

The main ghat where the grand evening Ganga Aarti is performed daily.

Dattatreya Temple

Attraction

Dattatreya Temple

Kalo Dungar (Black Hill), Gujarat

Kalo Dungar, the black hill, is the highest point in Kutch at 462 metres — ninety-seven kilometres from Bhuj and twenty-five from Khavda, close enough to the Pakistan border that the army holds the actual summit and only military personnel go up. The Dattatreya temple below it is about four hundred years old. What most visitors stop for on the way is the magnetic hill, where a vehicle left in neutral appears to roll upwards; it is an optical illusion produced by the lie of the horizon. From the ridge you look straight out over the white of the Rann.

Deepamala Pillars

Attraction

Deepamala Pillars

Mahalakshmi (Ambabai) Temple, Maharashtra

Stone lamp towers in the courtyard, lit tier by tier on festival evenings. On any other night they read as plain pillars, which is why photographs of them look nothing like the usual reality.

Deolo Hill Park

Viewpoint

Deolo Hill Park

Kalimpong, West Bengal

The highest geographic point in the town perimeter, hosting a manicured park complex famous for panoramic views and paragliding takeoffs.

Deoriatal Lake

Attraction

Deoriatal Lake

Chopta (Tungnath), Uttarakhand

A small lake that holds a reflection of Chaukhamba on a still morning, about two and a half kilometres up from Sari village. Camping on the far bank is permitted and is why most people come.
