Palolem is a crescent bay in the Canacona region of South Goa — calm water, rocky headlands at either end, and a dense fringe of coconut palms leaning out over the sand. It is the quiet alternative to the commercial beaches of the north. The shape of the bay keeps the currents to almost nothing. The wooden stilt cottages and beach shacks along the shore are temporary: every one of them comes down before the monsoon, which is why the place still feels like a village.

When to go

November to March, when the eco-resorts are all open and the sea is calm.

Why visit

Palolem is a crescent bay with water calm enough to actually swim in, which is not true of much of north Goa. The shacks come down every monsoon and go back up in October, so nothing here is more than one season old.

Cultural notes

Palolem has kept the character of an old coastal village, shaped by the Christian and Hindu fishing families who have always lived here. Tourism is run by the community and kept deliberately small, with firm rules to protect the shore even as foreign visitors keep arriving.

How to reach

The closest railhead is Canacona station, 3 km away, though Madgaon Junction is the major railway hub (38 km). Dabolim Airport is 60 km north, reached by private tourist cab along NH 66.

Cabo de Rama takes its name from the legend that Lord Rama sheltered on this cape during his exile. The headland fort — held by the Soonda rajas until the Portuguese took it in 1763 — is mostly a romantic ruin now: laterite ramparts, a few rusting cannon and the little white church of St. Anthony still in use inside the walls. The real spectacle is the cliff-top view down the wild Canacona coastline and the hidden beaches below.

The Basilica of Bom Jesus is at the centre of it. The Basilica is baroque, and unusual for it: the facade is dark laterite, left un-plastered rather than finished. Inside are gilded altars and a marble and bronze mausoleum. Straight across the square is the Se Cathedral, one of the largest churches in Asia, built in the Portuguese-Manueline manner.
