Built in 1550 as a watchtower on the highest point of Santo Estevão island, this was the easternmost defence of the Velhas Conquistas, set there to keep an eye on the Mandovi. The Maratha incursions of 1666-68 got it enlarged into a small fort, which did not save it: in 1683 the auxiliaries posted to hold the island fled, and the Marathas took the place and massacred the garrison. After the Novas Conquistas were annexed it had no job left, and a viceroy's decree abandoned it in 1811. Restoration work was done in 2012. Go for the vantage point rather than for a great deal of masonry.

Fort Aguada, completed by the Portuguese in 1612, guards the mouth of the Mandovi from the Sinquerim headland — the strongest of Goa's coastal forts and the one that never fell. Its name comes from the freshwater springs ('agua') that replenished passing ships, stored in one of Asia's largest freshwater cisterns. On the upper fort stands a stout 19th-century lighthouse; below, the ramparts drop to Sinquerim beach and the sea.

Baga and Calangute are the commercial heart of North Goa, a continuous stretch of golden sand on the Arabian Sea and the busiest coast in the state. The day is given over to water sports; after dark the same strip becomes the centre of Goa's nightlife. Food shacks, water sports operators and international music bars run almost without a break along the shore. Calangute is the shopping and family end of it, while the clubs and beach parties start around Baga creek and go late.

Old Goa, or Velha Goa, stands on the bank of the Mandovi a short drive from Panaji — the former capital of the Portuguese Eastern Empire, and still a dense cluster of colonial churches several centuries old. The Basilica of Bom Jesus is at the centre of it. The Basilica is baroque, and unusual for it: the facade is dark laterite, left un-plastered rather than finished. Inside are gilded altars and a marble and bronze mausoleum. Straight across the square is the Se Cathedral, one of the largest churches in Asia, built in the Portuguese-Manueline manner.
