Gir, near Talala, is the last place in the wild where the Asiatic lion survives. Its dry-deciduous forest and scrub also shelter leopards, deer and a wide range of birds, and safaris run from the sanctuary's gates.

When to go

December to March brings optimal wildlife tracking conditions. Note that the core sanctuary areas remain completely closed to tourists from June 16 to October 15 for monsoons.

Why visit

Track wild Asiatic lions — found nowhere else in the wild — on an open-jeep safari through the forest.

Cultural notes

The forest is home to the traditional semi-nomadic Maldhari pastoral communities and the Siddi tribe, descendants of East African settlers who showcase unique musical and dance forms.
