Gir, near Talala, is the last place in the wild where the Asiatic lion survives. Its dry-deciduous forest and scrub also shelter leopards, deer and a wide range of birds, and safaris run from the sanctuary's gates.

When to go

December to March is the best stretch for tracking wildlife. The core sanctuary is closed to visitors from 16 June to 15 October for the monsoon.

Why visit

Track wild Asiatic lions — found nowhere else in the wild — on an open-jeep safari through the forest.

Cultural notes

The forest is home to the traditional semi-nomadic Maldhari pastoral communities and to the Siddi tribe, descendants of East African settlers, who have musical and dance forms found nowhere else.

How to reach

By Train: Junagadh or Veraval railway stations are the nearest. By Air: Rajkot Airport (PBI) is about 200 km north, or Diu Airport is 100 km south. By Road: Easily reachable via private charter vehicles or regional GSRTC buses from Junagadh.
